There are no set no of sylables(sp) in a word, my missus has a degree in english and studied phonetics for 2 years, and we had this discusion this week.

It depends on accent and also the shape anway a word is formed by the mouth.

the word beer.........one sylable(sp) to most

welsh tend to say it as 2 . berr yah.
