I watched Saw I at the cinema, but only saw Saw II and III this week.
I have to say that Saw II was an entertaining, if far from perfect affair, but Saw III was just terrible. Too many flashbacks, a terrible angle with a far from intriguing Amanda, too much Jigsaw, tedious sets, gore instead of tension, numerous plot holes, etc, etc. Also, why has someone who has been picking on drug dealers, murdererss, police informants and so on suddenly think a nurse who takes the odd depressant pill and a poor fellow who's having trouble letting go of the death of his 8 year old kid are worthy of mental torture and a lesson in morals? Doesn't make sense for me. And who the eck are we meant to get behind as the audience? There doesn't see to be a 'hero' of any kind to lead the film.
I get the feeling that they have forgotten the fundamental basics of a good horror movie and have decided that as long as they keep coming up with new and fascinating traps to pleased the perverted (yep, I'm one of them), they don't have to worry about the storyline or character development.
I hope Saw IIII is better, although I have a feeling it won't be. Less is more with these things.

I think with films like this you will always compare it too the first one, and they'll probably not live up too that, but I still really enjoyed them all the same...

I enjoyed the concept of Saw 1 and even thought it was a horror film it had enough to make you think. I thought Saw II was ok, but some bits didn't make sense to me and was starting to drift from the idea that made the first film interesting. I haven't seen Saw III yet, but the thought of a Pig Mulcher has me interested.

I can understand why ppl think the 2nd or 3rd one is not too special, or the plot is slightly flawed somewhere, but I dont know anyone who hasnt really enjoyed the 1st one, or anyone who guessed the ending...

an awesome idea for the film and the twists and turns are just emense and such a great touch in Saw I.... Saw III bit gory, blood & guts and not too much on the basic idea but reading the synopsis on Saw IV seems like they have gone back to basics and come out with a really amazing finish

saw 1 was really good and saw 2 was OK but it became boring in 3 and in saw 4 i hope it will follow the same format as before and better challenge for them to face if that happens it will be amazing

Well what can I say, usual SAW lunacy but still really enjoyed it, i mean who doesnt wanna have to see a rapist gouge out his own eyes! Plenty of blood and guts but also some good background detail explaining JIgsaw and his wife etc, also some sneaky moments involving old characters, such as Matthews, Addison, Rigg etc, oh, and prepare for SAW 5 guys!!

It sounds to me that you are saying that it was the usual crap plot, character developments, etc, but had enough sadism to keep fans entertained... which is fine by me, I'm a gore-hungry sadist too!
By the way, one of the things I hated about Saw III was that they focused too much on Jigsaw rather than a face protagonist. Sometimes, if you know too much about the villain's background, thought process, family, etc, it takes the edge off them as a villian. They suddenly don't become quite so creepy or mysterious when you fully understand the reasons behind what they are doing. In Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter was a super character because he captured the audience from just 20 minutes of screen time - enough to win an Oscar! In later films they fecked that up by making him the centre of attention and trying to explain the character. Big boo boo. Sometimes less is more and leaving you guessing as to why they are such evil beings is a more effective method of character development.
Saw I is still the daddy in my eyes, but I'll be heading out to the cinema next week for more eye gouging in Saw IV.
