Putting my dog down was one of the hardest things I have ever done.

... but after a while you remember the good times, not just when they were ill, and you realise it was the right thing to do.

Cradling one of my cats as he died was one of the saddest moments of my life. It was strange too, I could literally see the exact moment the life went out of him as a sheen passed over his eyes and he stiffened. I cried like a baby all day.

17 is a very good age for a cat Sark, neither of my cats made it that long, and it sounds like he had a battling and interesting life. If you have some good photos of your cat put them aside/ get them scanned for posterity as you will look back with fond memories in the future.
