Computer virus to watch out for
«

I had one of my poker accounts suspended reacently due to a Trojan virus doing the rounds. The site in question 'Betfair' were very helpful and recommended a free download that identified and solved the problem. I had seen the program / Virus, attempt to contact the internet from my pc on several occasions but was not sure what it was or that i needed to act.
Its is called "svchost.exe" and i guess got in through an email.
If you are worried or have seen this on your pc I suggest you download from the following link. As usual there is a free version or an upgraded version you can pay for.
http://free.grisoft.com
( do not put www in the link)
it searched through my computer found the virus and deleted it. please do not delete this as spam as It may help others who have this virus. feel free to move to another spot if needed.

svchost.exe that lives in your windows\system32 (or equiv %systemroot%) is essential for your system to run.
e.g. run task manager, look at all the process names = svchost.exe
Please don't try to delete that file or you'll render your computer inoperable.
If this file is received via email, obviously delete it !

Yeah - everyone has at least one instance of it running.
Obviously if you're the sort of person that opens up random email attachments or downloads files from dodgy websites or file-sharing networks then you should have anti-virus software running which should pick up anything untoward.

Blimey...when the nurse lands to our local school, she's just on about proper brushing of teeth.

I sometimes yearn for the days when I started on the internet 14 years ago.
Unix computers, Mosaic was the browser du jour (Netscape just round the corner), no IE (Microsoft didn't even know what the internet was), IMDB was run off servers at Cardiff university, no BBC site, the only newspaper online was the Telegraph (amazingly), no Google (it was all Lycos and Altavista for searching).
It must be eleven years since I last used Telnet.

But Mosaic was pants, why would you be nostalgic for something so bad?

It was the thrill of the new. When you'd been using Lynx, Mosaic was the most exciting thing ever.
Advances now are more incremental so not as exciting.

I started on Mosaic, technically it was still new, but I thought it was that bad it wasn't worth the hassle, Netscape was a Godsend.

I wasn't too harsh - best that non-techy types reading this thread get the message to 'practice safe internet' before they fall victim to something nasty which totally corrupts their machine.
Maybe I am like Rod's school nurse who gave him the old 'cough and drop'.
