How do you play this?

Hi,

I think I know the answer to this but just had a hand in Sky's Velocity tourney (for those that don't know it's a very fast structure 6 seater tables tournament), there were 8 players left and I was about 5th in chips.

Blinds 10,000/20,000 and I had 96,000 but was in BB (so 76,000 left).

4 on table
UTG was CL on table and very aggressive - he went all in 147,000 chips
button fold
SB (short stack) went all-in for remaining 30,000(ish) chips

I had KK

What do you do??

A utg all in almost always means aces, also a player has called and so you get the chance to ladder up the prizemoney. Fold and wait for a better spot when you can push and not call.

UTG has 7bbs! I think both of their ranges are wide enough to make this a call!

UTG All in certainly isn't always aces, it's more often than not AK or a small pair.  Aces would usually be a flat call waiting for a raiser.

Get your chips in there.

Ok I hold my hands up, it was a serious question but for a reason - I really think it's an auto-call (which is how I played it) but I keep on going out either on the bubble or just before the final table in tournaments and it has got me thinking that maybe I am wrong in how I play and sometimes should fold even though I'm fairly certain I'm ahead.

In the above case I was up against utg's A 10 and small blinds pocket 8's, needless to say the turn came an ace and the river a 10 (just to make sure!!) so yet again I was bubbled in 7th - not so much worried that I lost but was worried that I play these situations wrong.

Thanks for all the replies, it seems I am doing the right thing just being done-over by the poker gods but I'm sure that will change soon.

With this structure and the stacks as they are, not only can you not fold if you think you're ahead, there's also a fairly strong argument for calling even if you think you might be behind. The pot's about 140,000 when it gets to you and it costs you about 75k to call, so you're getting nearly 2 to 1. Also, you only need to beat the chip leader to show a profit - if the short stack wins the hand but you beat the chip leader then you go to about 130k. If you win the hand then you've got about 11 big blinds and a more than decent shot at winning the thing. If you fold here then Mr Big Stack is going to start calling you with pretty much anything. Presumably you're going deep in these tournaments by avoiding trouble more than most, but there comes a point where you have to accept that a structure like this just turns the whole thing into a crapshoot, and gamble it up with the rest of them. Gambling with KK usually not a bad thing...

Not at all and no offence taken either as I realised it would seem like a daft question but being fairly inexperienced I wanted to see if anyone thought folding was the right decision, I know that somewhere along the way I'm not doing aswell as some of the positions I get myself into suggest I should be doing but can't for the life of me work out where I go wrong (or indeed if I do) or if it's just that the structures I play in turn into a crap-shoot and I'm just not very lucky.

I think it's the structures you are playing on.  Sky's tournaments are fast paced, the velocity is just crazy.  Forget about playing poker, just get your chips in if the cards look good together with these.   

Why not have a go on some other sites, see what you think of them?

Ce la vie - done it again went out 9th in tonights 10pm Velocity.

Maccol came 4th though (so at least my chips helped somebody on blonde).
