3 years ago my eyes where perfect, now, after spending 10-12 hours in front of a computer most days i'm in the process of booking an eye test...

Does spending time in front of a computer actually affect your eyes - or is it something that would happen anyway?  I'm only asking as I spend about 12 hours (minimum) in front of a computer everyday (how sad is that?), and my eye sight is fine.

Any ophthalmologists on here?

Yes spending lots of time on a pc will mean that you go short sighted.. Its a natural thing anyway, but these days its gets quicker as we all spend time using our eyes for a distance of 10-20 inches. Your eyes get used to that distance, and when ur trying to look at something further away its harder for your eyes..

Who are trying to sell you glasses....

I still don't buy it.  Have controlled studies been carried out to confirm that spending time in front of a computer does your eyes in?  Why are mine OK?

It makes no difference to specsavers the maths of how peoples eyes go..

They were explaining the proccess.. You spend a lot of time looking at things that are 10- 20 inches away from your face and your eyes will eventually start to focus better at that distance, and struggle more for longer distances..
3 years ago, my eyes got better, i could see better for distance and i asked why that would happen. They asked if I had spent time away from PC/TV etc for the previous 2 yrs, and it was true. then i found poker, and my job turned to doing everything on the PC, and my last check 4 months ago, eyes had got worse again, a lot worse.

Not a Scientific explanation dan, but only what they said, and it sort of makes sense..

I am not sure I believe all this "your eyes will get worse if you use a computer" stuff.

Our eyesight gets worse with age - all of us - and I'm of the view (view, geddit?) that it's gonna happen whether or not we use Computers. Maybe that's a short-sighted view.

I'm sure that spending so long focusing on something so close does affect your eyes, but i'm only guessing...

It sort of makes sense - but why is my eyesight fine? 

Like I said, if there's a correlation, a scientific study could show this.  One or two people saying "my eyesight's got worse since I've been using a computer" is hardly convincing evidence.  Like Tikay said your eyesight changes as you get older.  Diet also has an influence on your eyesight.  If you're tired or ill, your eyesight can be affected. 

Interestingly, you can exercise your eyes for specific tasks.  I know the England rugby and cricket teams have brought people in to improve the team's visual performance.  Maybe people who sit in front of computer screens and don't use their distance vision don't need glasses, instead they need to exercise their eyes and their distance vision will improve?  Works for other parts of the body.  Won't make your opticians rich though.

Of course it might not be the PC at all as use of Viagra can cause loss of vision. it can develop a side effect - known as nonarteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) - within 36 hours of taking Viagra. In some cases, vision wasn't completely restored.

My eyes are fine but, it's my arms that are too short.



Seriously, Mrs Red and I both started to need glasses for close work/reading at the same time, although I spend long hours at the computer and she doesn't.

Also, we have good long distance vision, if the problem were computer related it would be the other way round.

In September of 1999 I had perfect eyesight.  By the middle of October 1999 I had trouble seeing across the room.  Unfortunately I was broke and didn't really have the money to go to a decent optician and instead I went to a cheap and nasty place in a troubled area of Kilmarnock.  The guy I saw did the eye test in about five minutes and I was given glasses.  I asked him if he thought it was unusual for a 19 year olds eyesight to deteriorate so badly in the space of about four weeks, he said it was normal and just one of those things.  I thought he was talking crap at the time, but I bought the glasses all the same as I needed them to see.

A few days later I started feeling really rough.  I made an appointment with the doctor and he did a few blood tests.  It was found that I was diabetic soon after.  Within two weeks after my medication started working, I had binned the glasses and touch wood my eyesight has been good since then.

Don't go for a cheap optician, they are cheap for a reason.  The doctors I saw at the time told me any decent optician would have advised that I make an appointment with my doctor straight away as it wasn't normal for a persons eyesight to go from eagle vison to awful in that period of time.  I am not saying you are in the same position I was, but a good optician will be able to give you great advice on eye care and a crap one will not .  I went back to my optician and told him he was an idiot, but he said it was an error any optician would make.
