Have I just seen a small hurricane?

Seriosly folks - this has just really freaked me out.
On the way home, just getting into my village I see these lights in the sky to my right, it looked like a bit above tree level.
There were a few of them and I thought it was a police helicopter with a searchlight, I live by the M1 and sometimes they practice hovering above the motorway.
But the lights weren't quite right, instead of the lights going down it looked as if the lights were spinning and coming up from the ground rather than facing down.
All of a sudden the lights had gone (I mean really really quickly), they were now way ahead of me and on the left, near the motorway bridge ont he otherside of the village. I stopped the car and got out to see if I could hear anything but it was just windy - no helicopter noises. The lights looked like war time searchlights spinning wildly and catching the clouds as they spun if that makes sense - but I couldn't see the source of the lights.
Trying to think of a logical explanantion I thought maybe it was a car with lights on the top that were rotating. I know that sounds silly but thats what it could have been.
Anyway I decided to investigate further and drove towards the motorway bridge - it was like trying to find the end of the rainbow - just as I got there the lights disappeared. I drove a bit further and noticed that the wind was really getting up and making a lot of noise. My instincts told me I was witnessing a twisting wind of some sort.
I turned the car round to go home and it was quite scary - normally looking towards my village you can see the lights of Northampton beyond, a sort of constant orange glow in the background. When I had first noticed this strange light thing the glow was there, now going back it was pitch black - really really scary.
I am at home now and the wind when I got out of the car was howling round. It's still really really dark and its quite unnerving. All the doors and banging even though they're closed and the wind is very loud.
So - what do people think - can a twister appear to draw light up from sources on the ground? Is this what I saw? I should add I haven't been drinking or doing drugs!!

Funny! If only!
I tell you what - it was fascinating - never thought I'd be the nature type but I'd love to see the Northern Lights now - and I don't mean Blackpool!

You might find this hard to believe, but I do have a dozen or so witnesses.
About 20 years ago, we were stopping (Camping) on a large, empty, and singularly uninteresting piece of land near Bedford. It was one of those huge tracts that just sits there waiting for someone to come along and build an industrial estate on it.
As I recall, it was the middle of summer, one of those days when it is so hot that you can see the heat haze shimmering, and it’s really quiet because even the birds and the bees have found a shady spot to lie down and put their feet up.
It was too hot to work, but obviously not too hot to shop because most of the women-folk had gathered up their children and headed into town, leaving group of men, myself included, to sit cross-legged on the dusty ground. We were idly chatting and smoking while trying to make the best use of a small rectangular shadow cast by a Bedford lorry.
One of the men was telling a us a story which, had it been a film, would probably have been rated at least PG. Suddenly he changed the subject mid-flow, and I looked up to see Mrs Red, (who thank God is not much into shopping) approaching us with a tray of tea. Just then, near her feet, a swirly breeze blew a little collection of dust, dry grass and other debris along the ground in a little whirlpool shape.
I’ve seen these before, many times. They usually last for a couple of seconds, travelling a few feet before disappearing. This one didn’t. It continued to grow, collecting more dust and detritus as it went. When it was about the size of a man, it went in to my caravan through the door (which Mrs Red had propped open) and came back out again a few seconds later carrying two cushions and a clock. Then, as if tired of it’s game, it just dropped everything in a neat pile and was gone, leaving us all slack jawed and stunned.
I swear this is true. The people who were there still talk about it to this very day.

The wind sounds like some sort of naughty poltergeist trying to pinch you stuff and scare you. sounds great but id freak if i seen someting like that.
tracey
it could have been a number of things you say. When you were describing them, i thought of the aurora Borealis (northern lights). were they differing colours? the Borealis normally is. The other thing it could be is these lazer lights that are beamed up into the sky and if it was cloudy, this would have made a lovely light show. The final thing that came to my mind was fireworks? I was in glencoe last weekend and saw a spectacle beyond the mountains. The clouds were flashing and i thought it was the aurora Borealis. Its my dream to see those lights and Ive chased them several times but never seen then. i keep a daily watch of the aurora activity around the world so ill let you know if any are forcast for the Scotland and england. Anyway, turns out it was fireworks from a village miles away lighting up the sky
still a lovely sight
If you have an open mind and none of those explanations fit, and if it was flying, then its a UFO. it doesn't mean its from space but it would be great to think that is was:) good luck with your research

Chinese paper lanterns?... been causing havoc on the "I've seen a UFO" front over the firework period - including sightings by aircraft.

Yes - i thought it could have been something like the laser lights - exactly what it looked like - but they moved so quickly from one side of the village to the other and the source of light was below like a little spinning light show - just not possible to be one. I think it was what Red saw - a twisting wind and somehow it plays tricks with the lights against the low laying cloud.

American Scientist Dr. Ted Fujita (who devised the F-Scale used to measure tornado whatsits) worked out that the UK has more tornadoes per unit area than any other country in the world.

No idea what it could be, but sounds amazing. I'd be checking the local press to see if anyone else saw anything.

Yeah, I've seen some funky stuff when I've been sitting around smoking with my mates as well.
Anyway, check this one out. Two days ago I woke up in the morning and immediately started singing the hymn Morning Has Broken. Why? I have abs no idea. It just came out loud and proud. Now the last time I sang that song was prob at school in assembly as I don't usually sing hymns and such. Just as I finished singing the clock radio kicked in blasting out the hymn Morning has Broken. Now let me tell you this wasn't radio 4 or anything like that it was either Heart or Galaxy. And I have never heard that hymn on the radio before in my life. Now I don't care about freaky winds or strange lights cos that was utterly crazy and I can't explain it. This kind of thing has happened to me before, and whilst it's amazing, I also find it the single most useless gift in the world. Oh and I also have a witness to this miracle as there was a woman in my bed.
