I dunno the startup screen is a list of ways to boot into windows so it has to be before, i didn't get the impression it was shuttin down just hanging on the black screen.

On the subject of busted windows i was given a lappy to use in poker comps.
To cut a long story short i ended up installing win 2000 on it  but it on bootup it shows the 2000 splash screen then the screen jut turns off, it's as if it goes into sleep mode.
Tried every boot option thru startup menu and bios and it does the same.

Anyway i can access it from another lappy?
I can get a crossover cable but i don't know if i'll do anything?
Trouble is i only has a cd drive and it ignores the win disks

Crossover cable won't do much unless you're in windows.

Will it not boot from the CD drive at all? (presume you've checked bios)

Made sure the CDs themselves aren't faulty?

You could try a linux distribution that would boot from a USB stick.

Can i boot from usb?
Didn't think i could, i have an ISO image of a win 98 bootdisk but no blank disks to put it on yet, this was to be my last attempt before using it as a doorstop.
I'll check out linux.

I guess it would depend on how old the laptop is...

You can also run a linux live CD that will let you boot into linux without installing.

I've never tried the usb booting myself, but the live CD works well.

Ubuntu is pretty simple - http://www.ubuntu.com/

I'm thinking about switching my desktop to it, as it has many handy tools that I can't find for windows!

Pretty sure usb only works when windows enables it because i know for a fact that usb devices won't work in safemode because it's minimal drivers only.
I'll deffo try linux, last time i used it was redhat back in the day!

Fact i found interesting:
windows 98 is 125mb's!!!!

depends how new the mobo/bios is, mot modern stuff will give an option to boot from USB in the bios.

can you not just take the HD out and put it in a usb caddy ?
