Has a PG certificate, and I have two boys keen to see it

To those who have seen it, is it suitable for children down to the age of 8 please, or not?

If not, why not? (ie what led to the certificate)

thank you

Assuming that these are the same children you take to watch Leicester City then surely they've been exposed to far worse horrors already.

I'm interested in responses to this too.

I take my 7 year old to the cinema every christmas eve and was thinking of The Golden Compass this year.

Don't they say that PG's are suitable for 10's and up or something like that.

Yes, it's suitable. There are a few creepy moments and the odd scrap, but nothing too disturbing. Think somewhere between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

I thought it was mediocre by the way and a complete missed opportunity, totally devoid of character, development and the key word 'fun'. I preferred Harry Potter and Stardust.

No, I only read non-fiction, but I believe that having read the book shouldn't be a pre-requisite and that the film has a responsibility to stand up on its own.

I have never read a Harry Potter book, but thoroughly enjoyed the film. I didn't find the Golden Compass enjoyable. The main problem I believe is that stories and angles are underdeveloped and what is supposed to be an epic journey to the North Pole, feels like a 5 minute trundle down the road. Bizarrely, if the film had been twice as long, with more attention given to the narrative and various character arcs, then I feel like I would have been sucked into the world far more easier. This is what I hear the book achieved.
