String betting is when you bet/raise in 2 parts..first you fling some chips in the middle and then you fling some more in when it's actually all part of the same raise.

The best thing to do is always (!!!) announce your action before you bet. Clearly state that you raise AND the amount before moving chips over the line..that solves it

also don't go for the verbal string bets that you've seen in the movies. 'I call your 100 and raise you 300' will go as just a call. 1st action or declaration goes.

best thing to do until you've got some experience, as Boldie says, is announce your action first

I agree but is a verbal string bet the same as a physical one? Would I not be allowed to say 'ill call your ££ and raise you ££'? at a live game?

No, once you have announced " I call ", that is your action. Most dealers will use a bit of common sense and explain the rule  but let it go for that time.Though, some are little Hitlers and love enforcing every rule, so the best option is just to announce the total , saves a lot confusion.

I did a string bet at a blonde bash against simon nowab and the table jumped on me. It took me a while to know what the heck they were talking about. I was told only one chip would count which was a real pity as i had a FH. Luckily, simon called the big raise i put in on the river and i won against his trip 7's. Lurvly:)

I once got accussed of string betting when I announced all in pre-flop but then dropped my chips into the middle one at a time as I was counting them up. They made me only call, which was lucky cos I folded on the flop when I completly missed.
