Whenever I play live tourneys I feel the general standard of play is very weak in comparison to online, however I haven't played enough to be certain

There is a tourney at G casino Manchester tonight £250+25 f/o - What level of tourney on the internet would you reckon this would be equivalent to (I appreciate it's hard to be exact but just want the benefit of peoples experience who have played more live poker than me)

generally speaking i would say ur right but i cant see a £250 freeze attracting a weak field to be honest. The game wont be as soft as it would be if u were playing a 20 rebuy.

You would be amazed at just how weak big buy in fields can be. Just to quote a couple of examples, during the £1000 Midland Masters, (a 10,000 chip, 1 hour clock event) I saw several all-ins during the first level with one pair hands. I even saw an all in pre, 55 v AJ.

At cardiff in a £250 buy in, someone rr me all in, creating a 18k pot during the 4th level. He was holding A6 (suited)

Standard is not the word I would use.

To me it is like this :

Online : Bust out of an MTT , just start another one

Live : Bust out of an MTT , either play cash or home!

The "fear" of busting online just isnt the same as the "fear" of busting live

So what you get is more coinflips online and more laydowns live.

That is my general opinion anyway.

Brighton main event in October, 10k chips affair, level 1 25-50. UTG opens for 100, called in 2 spots, BB makes it 400, UTG makes it 1k total, all fold BB makes it 3k, UTG Jams, BB dwells and says he is pretty certain that BB has KQ?!?!? and calls. BB had 22, UTG had 88!

Live players are generally horrendous, online players have a basic grasp of the fundamentals. £250 FO id expect same field as a $50FO online.

How can the standard be so different, the bulk of the players I play live with have learnt the game online, and still play the bulk of their play online, so the players are basicaly the same.

Some of the old school live players who do not play online are generally poor tournament players, many treat the tournaments as something to pass the time until the cash games kick off,  then they become dangerous poker animals, who sometimes appear very loose and many of the younger online players leave the game wondering how on earth they lost all their cash to 'that donkey'.

I think the biggest difference is the social element, many people treat the basic live tournaments as a night out, just the same as going to the pub, and poker is the entertainment, so attitudes are relaxed and they are prepared to gamble to a greater degree.

In theory the core of the players are the same people, so the standard of play should be the same, but as it is not in most cases then it is obviously down to the attitudes of players when they sit at  a real table.

In the higher stakes games, I would argue that the players who are gambling their whole tourmaments on marginal hands in the early stages are the same people who are pushing all in with ace rag on the first level on line.

Where do you play?

Nearly everyone in my local casino swears blind that online is rigged and they barely ever play it.

Its funny, most poker magazines have had at some point a 'how to prepare for your first live game' article which imply that online players get eaten alive. I think it should be the other way round, some of the boys from my local casino talk about online poker like its some mythical place where people wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people.

Some of the crap I have heard from 'live' players about how its impossible to win with the best hand online is remarkable.

The best was when someone asked 1 of the tin hat brigade how come myself Paul Parker and Martin Green (Brighton locals) all win big online, the reply came "they must be part of the conspiracy" i kid you not
