Hi guys,

I'm going to need to buy a car pretty soon but have no idea what the insurance groups mean..have seen some nice cars but ..erm..they are in insurance group 18 (pretty high, eh?) does anyone have any idea what the average cost in this group is? Not looking for a solid figure but just a ball park one would do.

Can you not pick the average car, go onto an insurance website and enter the details with that car to check out the ballpark price?

Mate has a Civic type-r which is group 17, he pays £690 fully comp with 6 years no claims (living in a rural area mind)...

I've got a Group 20 car - £800 a year.  Cheaper in the wife's name.

Agreed.  Or get a better quote and demand the existing insurers match or beat the better premium.

Always add an extra driver, don't know why but it drops the premium. Also checkout quidco.com for cashback on car insurance, got mine this year for £98 fully comp with £120 cashback from the Pru.

Donkey?  Bang goes your opportunity of saving money bawsac!

Seriously inputting a fake address doesnt work, its one of the main factors used when rating a policy.  If you opt out of marketing material they aren't allowed to spam you year after year.

Doesn't always work.  Its depending on the market, insurance like anything can vary from year to year depending on the company and the losses/profits they made the year before.  For example the top 5 insurers in the UK last year took a bit of a beating after the floods, although this affected home insurance more than car it a general increase in premiums accross the board helped get this money back.   There weren't many companies who never increased their base rate.

Possibly not.  But if you stay with the same insurer they won't offer you the best premiums without provocation.

(Just going on my experience over the past 8 years).

Whats the deciding factor for people when buying a policy?

Is it cost? Reputation? Claims handling?  Policy features and benefits?

Sometimes you need to pay that little extra to make sure in the event of a claim your well looked after.  I'm not going to try and sell the mob I work for but generally we are pretty good in comparison to most other insurers.

Ohh and some of the comparison sites aren't worth a feck!

I must admit me and the wife have stayed with a certain insurer because we have had a couple of claims both times repairs were carried out rapidly, courtesy car supplied. As a result  we believe we get a good service for our premium.

Although for my old clapped out run to work car i used to go for the cheapest possible quote just to keep it legal.
