I'm off on my holidays in a week or so which becomes the reading season for me.
So if anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated.
Big Laz gave "The Year Of The Dog" a plug last year and I must admit it was superb, unputdownable in fact, so that is a clue as to my vacation reading taste. Historical novel type thingys with mob/gangster overtones.
Thanks in advance.

Some modern crime fiction (recent discoveries to me) by Christopher Brookmyre & Mark Billingham, both cracking authors.

what I am mostly reading at the moment is Colin Bateman - he has written many books, and is the guy responsible for the original character of Murphy in the TV series Murphys Law.
Most of his books arent to be taken too seriously though, and "Belfast Confidential" and "I predict a riot" are the two most recent. They will make you laugh.
From the same pen as Year of the Dog, "Winter of frankie machine" is an excellent story using the old subtext of "you never get away from the mob".
Even better though is "California fire and life". Being set in the insurance business doesnt sounds like the most exciting of backgrounds, but think Fred McMurray in Double Indemnity. This is a brilliant book, if you can get a hold of it.
final two recommendations
Shutter Island - Dennis Lehane. Quite Shocking
The Hot Kid - Elmore Leonard. A rollercoaster ride thru 1930's Oklahoma dustbowl.
oh and
nine mil - robert ryan

Have you read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time? It's a great book for holidays and will only take you a day or so to read.
Amazon also recommends Life of Pi which is another great book for holidays, buy the two together for just £10.03!
