On the way to work today....

Today has started rather surrealy. I love Northampton if only for these moments;

On the way to work at 8.30 this morning I narrowly avoided colliding with a man in a wheelchair who was pushing himself at speed the wrong way down the road into traffic with a very determined look on his face.

As I steered to avoid him I saw that he was holding in one hand a large bottle of rose wine and pushing himself along like fury with the other hand.  My first thought was that he was obviously desperate for drink however as I continued along the road I saw a few bemused pedestrians, and as i turned my radio down I could hear shouting.

From around the corner came the owner of the local corner shop who was in hot pursuit and waving his fist at the same time. It would appear that the wheelchair user had stolen the booze and was making a get away (quite sucessfully) while being chased through the streets by the shop owner who was struggling to keep running. It was a very funny scenario if only because (and I'm not one to advocate crime) the wheel chair user was getting one over on the able bodied.

I have a few questions.

1. When did Ironside get into town?
2. How do you keep pushing with only one hand and not go round in circles?
3. How on earth did he think he was going to get away with it? He was a bit conspicuous, he wasn't even wearing a hoodie.

It made my day - the only thing the shop owner didn't do was shout something about 'those pesky kids'.

good post - rose though? Surely a Merlot or nice Shiraz would have been more suitable for these cold wintery days.

Perhaps thats why the shop keeper was going after him - a bit of wine advice perhaps?

With the country the way it is what would the penalty be if he was caught?  Maybe he figured that even with the odds stacked against getting clean away, the penalty of a 5 minute "Don't do it again son, on ya way" speech from the Police it was worth the risk.

He wasn't disabled. It's a perfect disguise, Dibble will be looking for some guy in a wheelchair - they'll never catch him.

Just been to the bank - this was the subject of the moment (we are a town but think we are a very small village) - apparantly this isn't the first time.....   You would have thought they would have sussed him out the second time - maybe he was in disguise or using a different wheelchair?
