http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/gallery/0007/nov/20/cern?picture=330365576Some amazing photos and brief overview of CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and what it hopes to achieve. The sheer scale of this thing is amazing. There was a documentary on the BBC a week or so ago about it, and I missed it. Hopefully it's on the iPlayer.

Absolutely. I'm not sure that's one of it's crowning glories though.

Absolutely. I'm not sure that's one of it's crowning glories though. This LHC malarky is BY FAR the coolest thing I know they have done/ are doing though. When this was first reported as being worked on a while ago it blew me away.

The tolerances are within millimetres as well. Incredible. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_ColliderCooling thousands of tonnes of the machine to within two degrees of absolute zero is a massive feat on its own.
