Good work Snoopy. The coverage of the EPT Grand Final does start on next week and yes (fanfare) could revitalise televised poker........if people watch it. Tell all your mates, tell them to tell all their mates, and if enough people watch it, televised 'tournament' poker will prosper.

so it's   MONDAY 26TH MAY 00.25, THURSDAY 29TH MAY 00.30 AND SATURDAY 31ST MAY 00.05

The players are good, the pokers good, the prize money's phenomenal, they are some cracking hands in it (Esfandiari v Rasmussen...all time great) and you'll like it I promise. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaseeeeeeeeeeee watch it. The Revolution will not be televised??? YES IT WILL. If enough people watch this next week, the Poker revolution starts here and it will be televised. so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't know, but how to television companies work out how many people have watched it?

lol, in Poland they actually used to do this. they'd send people out knocking on doors with clipboards asking what they'd watched the day before, then the government would announce that TV Maria the state religious channel had the most viewers and wveryone would believe it was done properly as they'd seen the clipboard men out gathering info

serious answers is that the tv companies employ companies such as this

http://www.tnsglobal.com/research/audience-measurement/ to sample selected households and extrapolate to national viewing figures

But if they only take a sample, how can they possibly estimate with any ounce of accuracy how many people are watching a poker show?

It's a statistically significant sample size, and therefore they can work out the national figures to a degree of certainty (which is why they usually give the figures with +-5%).

I don't see how it could be random enough to be accurate to be honest. I've haven't met one person in my lifetime who has been part of this sample.

What about environments outside the home? How do they measure them? Eg a casino where a number of people could be watching a poker show?

I believe that 5,100 households is the sample size.  25 million households in the UK.

It's unlikely you'll be part of the sample.

Not sure how they work out/guess the number of people watching in pubs/clubs, etc.

Yes, they do use a sample of 5,100 households:
