It had been difficult to secure a name big enough to hold down the headline slot on Saturday night. “We got a bit of a kicking this year,” said Emily Eavis, Michael’s daughter, the festival organiser.

First, Radiohead turned them down, preferring to do their own outdoor shows this summer. Blur showed some interest in temporarily re-forming before their singer, Damon Albarn, got cold feet.

Manu Chao  abs awesome live

Yeah! saw him twice on his UK tour last year, 2 great performances that went on for a long time. Audience was probably the oddest mix of people I've ever seen in Rock City too.

I'm perhaps a tad biased though, my name comes from a Manu Chao song!

I thought it was quite funny to see how completely underwhelmed Mark Radcliffe and Jo Whiley were just after the Verve had finished.

Jo: That was the Verve there who were, er, lovely.
Mark: Yeah, that was, er, quite good that. I saw Leonard Cohen earlier - he was fantastic.

Well that's done and dusted for another year, got back yesterday and have to say of the 14 I have attended it was one of the best.

I went down to Glastonbury weekend before the festival to enjoy the town and the local cider and managed to get surburnt up the Tor two days before the gates opened - not good for carrying kilo's of kit across a field I can tell you.

It was good to have good friends with me this year and the amount of people on site was amazing, I have not seen it so busy since the fence came down in 2000 - the crowds on Sunday had to be seen to be believed, especially on the other stage for Ronson a sight to behold - it all added to the atmos.  I am glad the branding rules are still in place and the site looks much more like it did pre 2000, all remains of the dark branded years post 2000 just about gone.  I think the only branding on site is Yeo Valley and Orange.

The weather obviously helped and the site changes have added something extra, the flag area at the top of the Park area is top draw, and offers some great views and pictures, I might even consider moving camp to that end of the site.  Trash city and Shangra La were both worth a visit and took that area of the site to a new dimension (I never like Lost Vagueness anyway)

Musically the Kings of Leon and Vampire Weekend were amazingly good.  The Wombats and Reverend and The Makers again proving that they will be huge, the Wombats just get better everytime I see them, and the obvious Beach Boys influenced harmonies offers something a little different to the other "guitar" bands of the moment.  Of the new bands I saw for the first time a mention for Sons and Daughters, Operator Please and MGMT all of whom seemed tight, popular and offered good stage presence - to see the crowd carry on singing for a good 3 minutes after MGMT had left the stage was some sight - if crowd reaction is a judge all 3 of these bands will be big, and deservedly so.

The obvious - The Ting Tings rock, an album of a time for a time, will her live performance be enough to forge a career long term? who knows.  Leonard Cohen was different gravy, as was Buddy Guy and Jay Z.   Wurzels rock, hard.  For me personally the weekend was all about Roni Size Represent and a fitting end to the dying empire that was live drum and bass, thanks Roni.  Finding out that Slim has been on a massive week while away, is of no surprise and obv imo.

Disappointments - The Clashes, Elbow vs Roni, Battles vs Buddy Guy vs Hot Chip was just cruel.  No Jamie T, No Pendulum.  Hearing Last of The Shadow puppets booming out an hour earlier then you were told they were on, and realising you have to run to catch any of the set.  Penate, Ashcroft, what cocks, Mr Ashcroft should learn he is not Ian Brown.  Mobile phones, I went mobile free this year - wish the rest of my group did.

Surprises - I just went with the group flow this year and it led me to have a much more "pop" music experience this year and I have to say I enjoyed most of it.  The Subways, 3 years to produce that difficult 2nd album - but 3 years to mature live into a great rock band, if the new album gets some air time this band could go places.  Newton Faulkner, a funny guy who can sing a tune or two.  Winehouse, people really don't like her, people wanted to her to fail I got the feeling, she is an ill young lady, needs help I was surprised at how ill she looked in the flesh. Black Mountain were great, as were Simion Mobile Disco and Metrona-my.  The weather, enough said.  How unfit I am - I think I have had a moment of clarity.

My 2p on the Jay Z debate - I loved the start to the set, he has balls I will give him that and he is good at what he does and I think it does have a place at Glasto, I have seen Cypress Hill, Roots, De La Soul and many other rap acts on the main stage of glasto, I would have preferred Dre or Eminem, but Jay Z got his chance and did what he did very well and had some fun (The subtle Smack my Bitch up sample in the Winehouse cover was top draw) but for the press to question its musical credentials is laughable.  Jay Z had a full band, live musicians who were very talented, the samples seemed to be produced live and the mixing was live - Jay Z rapped over the top.  Compare this with the Press hyped "Best" set of the weekend from the Ting Tings, one guitar and some drums, a rhythm guitar at that, no live bass or percussion just two people playing over a backing track, but which one has the talent ?  At least Jay Z was truly live, can the same be said for the Ting Tings?

Bring on next year - all story's of the death of the best festival in the world are fictional at best.  Granted it is changing, but everything has to evolve to survive, luckily for me I seem to like this new incarnation.
