last nights weekly pub tourney and my hand reading skills were at an all time high:

i told one woman she had pocket and had hit the straight, she turned over pocket , told another she had hit a full house on the turn, she turned over her full house that she had hit on the turn. both extremely good lay downs by me so why on earth did i make the following 2 bad plays:

1+UTG raises to 1200 with blinds at 200/400. I'm in BB so make the call with Ks9s. 2 other callers. 5k in the pot. Flop comes K44 so i stick in 3k. Initial raiser moves all-in over the top. the other 2 fold leaving me to put in an additional 9400 to call. 9400 to win a pot of about 30k. I ponder it for a while and come to the conclusion that he's playing AK but i make the call thinking he may be playing AQ, AJ, A10 and doesnt like the K. He turns over AK and takes the pot after i dont improve. Grrrr

2nd instance later on:

guy 2 my right is UTG and raises it to 8k with blinds at 2k/4k. He's been playing solid text book poker and I only have 20k left. I move all in with AJ suited even though i suspect he's playing a pocket pair. Everyone folds but him who calls and turns over QQ. And its good night from me.

why did i make the call even though i was right in what they had?

Hand 1; Why do you say "so I call" with the pretty K9 suited? It's generally not a good idea to make this call. (Though i've done it several times and still find myself doing so occasionally but always curse at myself for it) this part

no he doesn't like the K, or the 2 fours as he missed the flop. you got married to the hand pre-flop which is why you couldn't lay it down on the flop.

hand 2, standard push but in this case he happened to have a very big hand.

by that reasoning you call with any 2 pre-flop at this stage in the game?

The reason you should fold pre flop is cos of exactly what happened- you couldn't fold on a K44 flop when it's clear you could be easily dominated.

If u really want to call pre flop (which is a pretty big leak IMO) u should fold top pair 9 kicker- your looking to flop two pair or a flush draw.

I wont comment on the hands just the jist of the original post, why do you call when you know your behind?

I do this far far too much however sometimes I think of all the possible hands that beat me and I know that I'm not passing but when I call and he flips the nut straight I say to myself...I knew he had that!
