i think the astronaut has decided to create his own pension ... the "alien believers" pay silly money to get people like him to speak at seminars etc etc ... fair play to him... money for old rope.

Great point Kev but that doesn't mean he's wrong.

When you consider the number of solar systems in the entire universe the odds of earth having the only inteligent life must be astronomical.

think about it

no-one in mexico had been to eygpt or the reverse yet they both build pryamids

also it took england how long to build wembley

yet they built the pryamids without the help of the polish builders

POTM

I recall reading a short story many years ago that stuck in my mind.

A highly intellegent lifeform targets earth as its new home as it was no longer safe on their planet and invade us by the millions.

They set up camp and plan the attack which will be swift and deadly.

They have their assigned targets and plan to move into place at dawn.

Meanwhile a farmers daughter is sleepily making her way towards the cow shed to do the milking, she stops.. then goes back into the house.

She returns with an insect spray saying *pesky ants" and kills them all.

The story was obviously much better than my version but it did make me think.

Firstly you need the right type of star in the middle of it, in our case the Sun. You then need a planet to be exactly the right distance from it to maintain the right temperature. You need that planet to just happen to spinning at the right speed to not suck everyone in to the ground or let them float away.

Correct.  In the case of the earth, the heat produced from the core has also been an essential element in creating conditions for life to exist here.

Another important factor is plate techtonics, for a planet to be able to support living elements it has to have a floating mantel like the Earth has or it would be a dead planet.

Quote
You also need supporting planets. In our case we have Jupiter which has such a massive gravitational pull it sucks away all the nasty space debris that would otherwise smash in to us and turn us all in to kebabs.

That's actually nonsense.  We have been struck by 'debris' - and it will happen again.  The probability of a large asteroid hitting the earth is almost 1.

Yes and it was the astoroids that brought  additional elements that were needed to create life, but without the gas giants attracting so much of the rubbish we would be hit alot more often and it's the gravity of the gas giants that keep the asteriod belt in check.

Having said that a normal solar system will always be created in the same order with the planets consisting of heavy metals nearer to its centre (sun), then the medium weights and finally the lighter gas giants.

That might not be true.

I'm certain I saw a programme about traces of tobacco & cocaine being found in the wrappings of mummies in Egypt - as tobacco & coca plants only grew in South America......

I don't really go for that evolution bollox either. It tends to work on the principal that we evolve in order that we may survive, if we are evolved from Monkeys, why the f@@k are there still monkeys?

Geo.

You misunderstand evolution.

Evolution has no predetermined purpose, there isn't a 'goal'.  Evolution occurs thousands of generations, and random mutations make individuals within populations better suited to the environment they're in.  The ones better suited will flourish, and their offspring will thrive.  Those less suited will see their numbers drop over time, maybe even die out completely.

Bacteria are the most successful life-form on the planet, they don't need to 'evolve' into more complex organisms to survive to thrive.

I'd suggest you read up on evolution, here's a starter: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution

I'd recommend 'The Selfish Gene' by Richard Dawkins as well for a more in-depth introduction to how evolution actually works.

As for us coming from monkeys, we don't.  We're actually apes, and so share a common ancestor with monkeys - but we didn't evolve from monkeys.

Oh, and next question is why are there other apes and why didn't they all evolve into humans and the other species die out?  Well, if you remove humans, there are estimated to be 350,000 apes left in the world.  Most are endangered species, and the 6,600,000,000 humans have been more successful (for the time-being at least) over the past several hundred thousand years than the other apes.  Why?  Because as a species we're able to adapt better to the conditions of our environment - survival of the fittest so to speak.  Now where have I heard that before...?

I think it is unlikely we have been visited by other life forms.  If they exist they are just too far away.  We have been listening for transmissions for years with no success.

We might have been visted by an unmanned (unaliened?) spacecraft from an extinct civilisation.  Eventually when our sun begins to die we might send out these ourselves if we find that the technology require to travel through space to colonise other worlds is beyond us.
