Can't beat charcoal Rod, gas is too clean. No smoke, no soot, no flavour.

you need the smokey flavour charcoal gives to do a proper barbeque....and you can buy the 5£ throwaway ones if you don't have a permanent one

Got to agree about the charcoal, I don't often regret buying something but my gas barbecue was definitely a mistake. Not the same flavour at all even with those hickory chips you can throw on.
Not only is a gas BBQ unsatisfying, mine seems to want to be a flame thrower instead (my sister has the same one, it's just as bad), a total nightmare to cook on.
I have a feeling it will get lost on the way to the new house.
