Life Of Pi
Very much what Tighty said. Just magical work. All the stars you can eat.

Looking forward to Life of Pie now and can confirm the book is a great read. The author is not Mantel as TightEnd suggests but Yann Martel. Must be a full moon cos it's like mantis is trying to possess him today.

Considering going to watch Reacher on Boxing day.
Want to as i've read the books, Cruise playing Reacher is a massive turn off though

Just seen the Hobbit in 3D the high frame rate one. Took about 20 min to get used to it but it was well worth it. Not been a big fan of 3D films in the past but I would recommend the high frame rate.
The story was very slow in starting but increased with pace as it progressed. I enjoyed it but you could just see LotR again for much of the same.

We watched it in the same format.
The 3D is a bit artificial when they have one character stood in front of others - they look a bit like cardboard cut-outs. But for the majority of scenes, it's incredible. The high frame rate is particularly good for the action scenes I thought.
As for the film itself, really enjoyed it. Didn't feel as long as it was and was a shame when it ended.

I can't say I liked it. It's lighter and more like the hobbit book, kids will love it, but at the same time it's typical Peter Jackson really, too long, too slow and just a little bit cartoony. Even though LOTR is fantasy, the peril/jeopardy and cold realism of the original trilogy is light years ahead of this. I guess some will argue that's how the Hobbit is meant to be. For me it was a decent yarn. Not much more than that.

Well 2 hrs 46 minutes of film to reach the end of Chapter 6 of the book
To quote one reviewer "Peter Jackson didn't want to direct it and I didn't want to watch it, its like we were locked together in a cinematic suicide pact"
Of course its visually stunning, and the CGI is wonderful and nothing beats Andy Serkis as Gollum (still the ebst thing in any of these Middle Earth films) but
the editing!! it could be an hour shorter. It plods and it meanders. Of course some of that is the more whimsical tone of the book
the interminable 13 dwarves walking across a landscape sequences...
the feeling that no one is ever too far away from a sound stage....
I mean there's two films to come!

Not to mention 2 dwarf songs in the first 30 minutes! FML. If they'd all been ginger it wouldn't have been far off seven brides for seven brothers! Soon it'll be the adventures of Tom Bomberman or whatevs.

The moment of my Xmas so far
So we walk out of the cinema, swing open the double doors and head to the car park
A man is beside us with a roughly twelve year old lad, the lad is full of questions and wide eyed at the wonder of what he has just seen
Man says
"In the second film they get into the mountain and force Smaug out. In the third film the necromancer dies. It all ends ok"
lolol
Poor lad, thats the next two films spoiled then!

The Titanic sinks, Bogey makes Bergman get on the plane with her husband and Bruce Willis is a ghost.

Reacher was competent enough, just above run of the mill
Will always suffer in my mind from the casting of Cruise as 6ft5 blonde 50 something (in the books) Reacher, but he bought the film rights and produces it, so I suppose he gets waht he wants
Nothing startlingly original in this, but then again I have read the books so knew the plot in advance
Average fight scenes, routine car chases, a denouement you could see coming from several cities away
Probably struggles a bit with so many action films pushing the boat out on all the thrill and spills these days
