Watched Boyhood this week. Cleverly filmed over 12 years. Enjoyed it immensely.
Last night we watched Selma. No matter how many times I watch anything on the subject of the Civil Right movement it still stuns me how people were treated during my life time. Superb film and performances.

Deadpool....
Enjoyed immensely... basic story..but tightly directed... succinct and brutal with some genuine LOL moments... A breath of fresh air from our un PC wise cracking anti hero
Even my fairer half really enjoyed it
8/10

One from left field..
In an effort to help my eldest daughter in her A-levels.. purchased a copy of ' A street car named Desire ' and treated myself to a HD showing of the original version with a fantastically brooding Marlon Brando courtesy of sky on demand..
Delightfully overacted... the power of the main performances masked the deep, and for the time, troubling story.
I actually enjoyed it.. which is quite something from a cynic brought up in the Crash, Bang wallop area... maybe there is something to these old classics
Onwards and upwards .. Mayor of Casterbridge next.. all 3+ hours of it... My kid better be getting an A star after Dads help
9/10 just for Brando and Vivien Leigh's equally mesmerising performances

Hardy was a shocking revolutionary in his day. His style was completely out of sync with the normal Victorian way of writing. He used landscape and nature in a way similar to Shakespeare and his contemporaries. And the subject matter was darker, without the requirement of a happy ending like those process-driven Brontes/Austen novels. It was a complete contrast even to Dickens.
You won't get any of that in the film but it'll get you plenty of dad points.

The Invitation - A really good watch actually, kept me intrigued throughout, very taught. Don't think I've described a film as 'taught' before. But this is definitely taught.

Yep, never described a film as taught before. Probably won't again

Just got back from taking the kids to see The Jungle Book, loved it, real feel good film, tapping my feet away to Bear Necessities, a few laughs, a few watery eye moments, loved the cast (even though I've never really been found of Ben Kingsley) one of the best films I've seen in a while. You don't even really need the excuse of taking the kids to watch it.

I saw Eye in the Sky last week and would rec this as a kind of slow burning tense film about the use of drone bombing targets when there is a chance of civilian casualties. Was pretty eye opening that they use a %chance of injuring civilians and anything in the 40% range was deemed acceptable. A good 7 1/2 out of 10.
Saw Bastille Day too, a cops n robbers with all the cliche and Idris Elba playing a too cool American spook, summat you would enjoy if you stumble across it but about 5 1/2 out of 10.
I hadn't really liked the look of Birdman when it came out and watched it only coz it had been on the planner for so long but wow what a brilliant film. From the casting (most of the main actors have played parts in Super hero films and are all portrayed as pretty bad human beings and then bang in the middle of them is Zach Galifianakis who is famous for playing the crazy bearded dude in The Hangover films plays the only calm sensible guy holding most of them together) It really works as a one take looking film that sets out to be like watching a film that's done like a play. Keaton was tremendous and it seems they got Ed Norton to almost play himself as a hard to work with arrogant actor. Quite vicious towards Hollywood clique and of film chains putting out Superhero and cartoon films instead of serious movies. It was so good I watched it again the night after 8 1/2 or 9 out of 10

How the hell did Bad Neighbours do so well at the Box Office? It was terrible. Rose Byrne has zero comedy timing. Incred scenes.
