Quoted from Daily Record 24th July (2 1/2 weeks ago)

CARLOS CUELLAR has given Scotland's Shame FC a massive pre-season boost by pledging his long-term future to the Ibrox club.

The Spanish defender has become a hero with the Light Blue faithful after just 12 months in Scotland and his performances have attracted suitors from across Europe.

However, Cuellar has no interest in leaving Rangers and is committed to staying with the club for the foreseeable future.

He said: "I want to stay here for many years. I like the feeling I have with the supporters and that's very important.

"I'm very proud to have this support and it encourages me to go out and play for them.

"I've never experienced such warmth in my career before and it's very special.

'I'm very happy at Scotland's Shame FC and the supporters are one of the reasons
.  The club is fantastic and each year we have the chance to play in the Champions League.

"Last season was my best as a professional player but I hope this season will be even better."

Cuellar's outstanding displays last season won him two Player of the Year Awards and brought widespread praise.

The only slight disappointment of the debut term was his failure to get a look-in for the Spanish squad for Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.

National coach Luis Aragones was proved perfectly correct in his judgments as Spain lifted the trophy but the veteran quit for Turkish club football and Vicentedel Bosque is now in charge.

Rangers manager Walter Smith believes Cuellar would not let himself down on the international scene if given an opportunity and the player reckons he can make his cap dreams come true while starring in the SPL.

He said: "I'm really pleased about the victory of the national team at Euro 2008.

"I'd love to go and join these players because it is my dream to play for the national team. It is up to me. If I have another good season, I think I have a chance."

Cuellar knows performing well in Europe can hold the key to his Spain hopes.

For this reason, next week's second qualifying round first-leg match against FBK Kaunas could be crucial to his chances.

Cuellar said: "The Champions League qualifying games can be nervous and they can be difficult but we have good confidence in the squad and I believe we are favourites to go through.

"I loved the games in Europe last season and every player wants to play against the best in the world.

"When we beat Zeta and Red Star Belgrade to get to the group phase of the Champions League it was fantastic.

"To play against Barcelona was special for me because although I'd played against them before it was even better to meet them in the Champions League.

"Some people think it was more special because I'm a Real Madrid supporter but I don't support them.

"I don't have a team in Spain. I like all of the Spanish teams.

"I don't think there is any doubt that Messi, Henry and Ronaldinho were the best players I played against last season.

"Then, of course, we went into the UEFA Cup and we kept winning and winning. It was just so sad we could not win the Final.

"I think it was a fantastic achievement to get there but we wanted to win it.

"Now we start what we hope will be another good campaign but we know we will have difficult games.

"The important thing is to get back into the group phase and then see what happens."

When commenting on a matter that may involve a future criminal trial it's probably best to not comment at all, or at least get the facts right when you do...

On a more positive note, what do you make of the rumours of a Lovenkrands return?
