Hey all, I have just got a new car as my old one is in pretty bad condition and has ran out of tax and MOT, i was just wondering what the procedure for scrapping a car was and how much i could expect to be paid for it as i have heard the price of scrap metal is going through the roof! any help would be appreciated!
cheers

My grandad got a quote for £150 a tonne for scrap last week, he's chuffed with £300 for an old range rover!

Stick it in auction, they had a bit on 5th Gear last night about it, and some scrappy buying up an old Astra for £230. Seems like a nice return on a pile of junk.

Depends how much time you've got on your hands.
It's always worth ringing round the scrap yards to see who will offer you the most.
Some may collect for free. It's sometimes worth taking the battery off and selling that if it's any good or taking it to a tip. The scrappy's may charge you for battery disposal.
Never done this myself but our office dude is a wizard at it. He got us £250 for a knackered old van which they collected.

Be quick price is dropping daily after reaching a high about a month ago.
I work at the local End Of Life Vehicle Depollution Facility (breakers yard) and we are paying £60-£150 depending what car it is 2-3 weeks ago it was £100-£300

Also make sure you get a COD (certificate of destruction), that way you get no comebacks if they sell it on again.

I got £157 for 1.48 tonnes of P reg Mondeo estate about two weeks ago. You need to take your V5(? - log book) which they keep apart from a portion that is returned to you which you need to send to DVLA.
And no. I wasn't in the car when they weighed it.

Seems a lot of people forget about oil in these cars we have 6 of them at the moment all with duff engines.
Too late to put a reserve on it but worth bidding yourself and then getting your sister to end it early with you as winning bidder. Then ring up a local scrap collector and she should get at least £100 for it.
And maybe she should think about using a different garage!

What is affecting the prices? I don't think many people are aware of the value of scrap cars. I certainly wasn't.

As always it is supply and demand that affects the prices. 3 years ago you would have to pay around £40 to scrap a car as scrap value was very low, but the relentless demand from China and India for steel pushed prices up 6 fold but prices have started to drop, maybe because the Olympic building has finished?
