Great North Swim

Summary
Organised, by the same people who do the Great North Run, as a mass participation swimming event.

One Mile - across Windemere.

13th September - so too late to enter this years one, but this means over 12 months to train for next years.

And, it has the biggest advantage of all over the Great North Run - namely: it's not running.

A valid point.  As a country we should be proud at how well we do in the Paralympics - I think it says a lot about the British tradition of 'fair play'.  Others will probably disagree.

I'll be honest, I'm only watching it because my gf's next door neighbours are in the team, playing ping-pong. I'd still be proud of how we did though, anybody who competes in the Paralympics is brilliant.

I am giving serious thought to the London to Brighton bike ride.......but then I am also givong serious thought to how I could stake out Heathrow in four years time and make sure that I give a good old fashioned London welcome to those arriving for the first time. You know what I mean. Downward sloping mouth. Plenty of swearing. The occassional mugging. Oh Lord please don't let this be known as the Surly Games. Oh and just for comparison. China I believe spent 23 billion and had pretty much slave labour. We have a third of that and a couple of volunteers from Chigwell who fancied doing something different..........and yet I still hope that it will be the best olympics ever. The true Olympic dream

The swim above sounds cool, unfortunately I am a terrible swimmer.  I would love to compete in triathlon, but I would probably drown at the opening event . 


There is still hope for the Olympics, lol  .  This guy competed in the Olympic marathon at 48 yrs old and in the womens cycling event there was a competitor who was 49. She is going to try out for 2012 as well.  Amazing .

Scottish people, I have a question.   I read today that one of the British Triathlon events was held at the Strathclyde Country Park.   Maybe I am getting mixed up, but isn't that the filthy park with the shopping trolley/needles/broken glass Lake?    I don't fancy swimming in there

You'll do it no probs mate, its actually not that hard at all apart from a big hill at the end which most apart from the fittest walk half the way up any way. The last time we did it we were out on the piss in London till 3am in the morning and got up at 7am ish and did it.

Ha Ha, I don't know if you have ever swam in windermere but it is fking freezing. I went in with full wetsuit last summer and I can honestly say I have never been in water so cold LOL

I've only been like once but they had a nice boating lake there in front of a giant ned filled amusement park.. Should make for good TV.
