I've kid of let chess spill into poker and non poker topics, and thought it would be better for a specific thread on this wonderful game. I thought if anyone had any games they played they could share them here, tell of any good sites to play chess at or just share a new PB or great win.

I've been playing chess for 8 or 9 weeks, although I played 2 or 3 games while I was a child at school I never played again because I was more into football at lunchtimes. I was just a woodpusher anyway, I never had a clue I play on Chessmaniac and Red Hot Pawn. Chessmaniac is a great site and if anyone wants to come play for a team called British Bulldogs theyre more than welcome My rating fluctuates between 1300 and 1400 but its steadied at around 1380, but should get up to  1450 in the next fortnight or so (depends on games completed)

I know poker is the topic of this forum, but chess gives me so much pleasure, and its nice to talk to people who not only share one interest with me, but perhaps two interests

So then, whats your background in chess, rating, favourite openings etc?

Used to play a lot of chess when I was young (from 6-11 years old).  Stopped playing when it stopped being fun and became a 'chore'.

Started playing again on RedHotPawn recently.  I'm a better player than my rating, as I play too many games at once and blunder too much.

I beat 2 russians earlier in the year on holiday in Bulgaria on one of those big chess board thingys,,,,It drew quite a crowd too


shame they were only 16 and about 17...

still russians...my proudest moment in chess!

we used to have the choice at primary school on a friday (I think) afternoon of chess club or choir practice. chess won for me, have been playing a bit recently on redhotpawn but appear to be at a much worse standard than when I was at school, making too many stupid mistakes, but I'll keep working on it. same name on there as on here if anyone ever fancies a game.

I used to play as a primary school kid, entering a few competitions around Scotland.

There were a few dozen players in Scotland better than me (at my age level), whether I could have matched them if I had a good coach and applied myself I'll never know. I never really studied opening theory or anything like that, started many a game on the backfoot after an opening blunder.
 I still picked up the odd trophy here and there, and had a reputation for surprising the top players on occasion with an upset.

I entered the British championship one year and got an idea as to the different level the game was played at down South. Different kettle of fish completely, and they were all a bit wierd. It turned me off competing, and as I began secondary school I shifted my attentions away from chess to just being a normal kid.



I got back into it a year or so ago and started playing like mad on redhotpawn, and studying the game as much as I could (Yasser Serawens books are pretty kick-ass)
Gave it a rest when it started to become an obsession and was taking over my life. lol addictive personality-aments.

At my peak, I could probably give a 1700-1800 player a run for their money.
Relaistically at the moment, I'm probably a 1500 player or thereabouts. (redhotpawn ratings)

We had a wee stable on redhotpawn called "check or bet". Tinsel town, kinboshi, Swordpoker and myslelf (maybe a couple of others, I forget... sorry)


I want to study poker instead. The way I was playing SnGs 2004-2007 was very much like the way I played chess as a kid. Without studying ICM too much, without studying opening theory too much. Without reviewing my moves, without reviewing my hand histories.
Knowing a basic amount and just cracking on with it, resultantly under-achieving.

Can't change what has gone before but I can change the future.

I used to work for the British Chess Federation and I can confirm that this assessment fits in with what I remember.

I had the British Chess Federation library at my disposal, a fantastic resource -  I may not have made the best use of it.

The problem is that chess theory is immensely boring - so I mainly just read the history books.

Loved the game as a primary school kid. Stopped playing when I went to secondary school as it wasn't really played there. Played a few years ago at work, and was way out of practice. People were discussing opening strategies etc.
I have never used any of these, still don't know any of them.

Why the feck arent you playing chess then? Do you make a living from poker? Dumb question i guess, only 100 off being a GM!!! Money in poker or chess id choose poker if I was good enough. I presume u make shed loads from the poker

That is my dream, to become a Grand Master, and I want to ork as hard as I can to get there. Poker is a decent game and I can beat donks, but there are far too many good players to make poker attractive for me. That is not to say that chess is easy in comparison because its probably harder, but it is a gae that suits someone like me better who likes to study relentlessly. I can study 6 different variations of the Winawer Poisoned pawn Variation and enjoy doing so (geeeeeeek!) but studying hand history and reading poker mags doesnt stimulate much thought or interest no more.

Poker is a game where I felt I should get instant reward because i was better than than the local B&M game. That doesnt transfer to Online. Where as chess is tough to beat so you work hard and know if u do well enough then 20 yrs down the line you can be winning titles and possibly attain the distinction of being a Grandmaster

Hmmm common theme here i used to play for my primary school all the way through the Juniors and entered a few county comps for my age group finishing in the top 10ish from memory. My dad taught me and we played alot when i was young.

By the time i get to secondary school, i was playing football, cricket for junior clubs as well as school. So chess got shelved for these slightly cooler activitites. Have played very occasionally since, i may join one of these online sites and give it a whirl.

Is it possible to get a blonde league going? Though i will probably get killed , by the sounds of it.

that'd be an idea, especially the killing longy bit obv. anyone know a site you can do it on. I know it's a prob on redhotpawn as everyone needs to be a paying subscriber to play in any tournaments/leagues

I'm rubbish at chess.  I've tried loads but I keep losing.  My rating is only about 900 atm.  I did beat Kinboshi once to level the series 1-1.  I should have quit then as he went on to own me.

I saw one father berating his 12 year old kid like the kid had gone joy riding in the family saloon or something. The poor guy had just made a mistake in a game turning a won position into a draw.

I remeber thinking if this is what it takes, fuck that.

You could organise the league on a thread and just play the games as a non paid RHP member.
