I think Carragher is a good, solid player. But he isn't in King's class.
When both were fit in EURO 2004 King was chosen to play against France.
King>Woodgate>Carragher
^^
I would be very surprised if anyone else disagrees?
I don't think there is too much scope to disagree in terms of ability, but that's not to say it's the order you'd sooner have them in your team or squad.
King can't be regarded as a top class defender now imo.
Obv considering he's never actually done anything
Nail on head.
Who gives a fuck what Sven Goran Eriksson thought in two thousand and give a shit?
As I said in the Paisley/Ferguson Mourinho/Benitez discussion on here a few years back, the legends of the game are remembered for trophy defining greatness and their contribution towards it. King has achieved very little and it's even debatable what aspects he's better than Carragher in - certainly not defending. On top of this he's never consistently played at the highest level, ie the Champions League (IMHO CL>International Football).
If Spurs fans think King is better that's their opinion but history books and anyone with sense will say different. Same argument for Woodgate.
Talent and potential alone means fuck all. Look at Ryan Babel.

Even Joe Kinnear is asking the question
FOOTBALL NEWS
Given - Tottenham target.
KINNEAR: SHAY TRANSFER NOT A GIVEN
Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has warned Tottenham counterpart Harry Redknapp to save the price of a phone call if he intends to step up his interest in Shay Given.
The new Spurs manager, who has made a blistering start to his reign at White Hart Lane, has made no secret of his admiration for the 32-year-old Irishman, who has returned to top form after finally shaking off his injury problems.
He said: "I can save Harry the time and money and tell him not to bother even picking up the telephone, because there is no way Shay Given will be leaving this football club.
"We want to build up Newcastle United and get good players in, not good players out.
"And why would he want to go to Spurs? This is a bigger club than Spurs."

The only thing about Newcastle United that is bigger than Spurs is their stadium (which wont be for long) and their supporters.

Yeah Kamara was pissing himself laughing, looking forward to seeing it again. Starting to make Taibi look like a shrewd signing.

From the BBC website:
"1534: GOAL Fulham 1-0 Tottenham
A howler from Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes. Simon Davies strikes at goal, the ball glances off the head of Jonathan Woodgate and the Spurs keeper somehow allows the ball to slip through his hands."
Have they really not got a capable reserve keeper or is Harry trying to total devalue the resale value of Gormless lol

I don't think there is too much scope to disagree in terms of ability
, but that's not to say it's the order you'd sooner have them in your team or squad. King can't be regarded as a top class defender now imo.
Ability for a defender is more than being able to dribble with the ball. Organisation, command of the defence, decision-making, reading of the game, etc., are all part of a defender's ability. In those areas Carragher is top drawer.
Kind of assuming that ability when talking about a defender is more focused on positioning, decision making, heading, pace etc with them being more relevant than typical technique type skills.
Remove fitness and the order is King, Woodgate and Carragher - purely on Caragher's pace leaving him lower (I'd love to see his level in a non Liverpool shirt but tha is a different story). Age obviosuly comes into as well looking at this moment in time. Sadly, its all aout what happens on the pitch, and how often - so what you'd actually have in your team might be completely the opposite order.

If Shay Given leaves Newcastle, I'll walk and follow him.
