Will update later tonight. Nobody was in when i went earlier but just seen a car pull up (school boy mistake - i'd find it a little bit too much comedy if nothing comes of my complaint there's should get done as well and i could go out and say "yeh happening alot on the road at the moment") and them go inside so when i go to the gym i'll pop in. Insurance wise i won't lose my no claims but it will cost me £60.
Going to go over and ask for £95 to cover the cost of a new windscreen. If i don't hear back i'll contact the police etc.

I'd defo go round and have a word.

If they don't pay up, report them to the police. They won't be able to do anything but at least you'll have laid down a marker.

There was a similar problem in a block of flats I lived in - one flat of students whose window overlooked the carpark, rest of the block mostly twenties and thirties with proper jobs. My neighbour (6'4", worked as an engineer) went down one morning after a noisy party and discovered his car covered in chips that had obviously been chucked out the student window.

He went to have a word, and expressed his displeasure to the occupants. The conversation went along the lines

"It wasn't us"
"I know it was you and if it happens again I'm going to kick your @&*%&@* head in"

It didn't happen again    That works fine with a bunch of lads. When it's girls you'll need to be more subtle.

One lad lives in the house...fml...no sexual favours from him thank you.
Conversation went something along the lines of....
Me: Saturday night somebody from your house threw something at my car and cracked my window
Him: we didn't have anyone round saturday night
Me: My mate saw it happen. They ran into your house.
Him: Oh...we did have 2 lads round.
Me: anyway they've cracked my windscreen
Him: what do you mean cracked?
Me: Come and look
Him: (at the crack) oh shit...
Me: Yeh so it's £95 to replace it. Giving them the opportunity to pay for it now and hear no more about it.
If not i'll have to contact the police and possibly send a complaint to your landlord
Him: I'll get on the blower and see if either admit to it. I'll let you know either way though. What happens if they both deny it?
Me: Well you've narrowed it down to 2 people for the police and it sounds like you've got both their numbers.
Him: oh..yeh...
Me: Anyway let me know by tomorrow or i'll go to the police.

If he doesn't come up trumps i'm gonna lay on the "well i'm disapointed, i mean where does it end? will peoples mates just be allowed to do this on the street and we'll all have to constantly shell out for new windows?"

Will keep you up to date.

They came round.
Both lads deny doing it. Both said they'd never do anything like that. They'd considered all chipping in for it but when the lads are so adamant they can't really afford it. Would have chipped in if they thought somebody was just covering because he didn't want to pay. They contacted the police and they recomended that they try and sort it with us as they were worried i'd retaliate.
They were nice about it but at the end of the day...
[ ] I'm getting some money
[ ] Getting no money makes me happy

Next up report it to the police and nothing happens, my mate has the hassle of making a statement and nothing will come of it.

Tell them to stay sober next weekend and they'll be a good way towards the £95.

You should definitely report it to the police but the odds on them getting any sort of result are very low.

You are more likely to get some joy from talking to the landlord. Might be worth popping round to let them know your plans, and point out to them that post-uni they will likely be looking to rent elsewhere, and the first point of contact for a reference is the previous landlord.

why would you contact the landlord? the guy's done nothing, his mates did but he got in touch with them and got them to come round. tbf he's done everything you'd expect him to and now you want to grass to his landlord. what more do you expect either the guy or the landlord to do? unless of course the landlord's a windscreen repair man in which case call him

This made me giggle.

I don't get the grassing someone up to their landlord (or employer) bit...It's something I first came across when working in Scotland..a LL had problems with one of the guys working at the company I worked and therefore complained to them. Instead of just telling the guy to naff off, that's it's not their responsibility and that it has nothing to do with them they actually called the guy into the HR office....WTF?

if your fully comp it will be replaced free and not affect your no claims.

Wrong. You will have to pay your excess to get it replaced. I fitted windscreens for 15 years, and came across this situation many times. It might be worth knocking on the door and saying you saw what happened, and ask them to pay the excess or you will go to the police. If you're fully comp the excess will be around the £50/£75 mark.If you're only 3rd party it could be expensive depending on what car it is.

Oh yeah,do me a favour and don't use Autoglass.  Wink

Oi. I work for Autoglass! You should def use them. Seriously.

Four reasons.

Firstly, its an extra point of leverage. Maybe they've had other complaints and will bottle it when they realise they could get their lease terminated and pay up the £95.

Assuming it goes beyond that and they don't pay up...

Secondly, because the guys did it while they were visiting his premise. I'd say there was a moral obligation on the neighbour to get this sorted.

Thirdly, because the stronger the reaction this time, the less likelihood there is of it happening again. Their course could easily have another couple of years to run so they could be neighbours for quite a while.

Fourthly, because Josedinho already told them that's what he was thinking of doing so all he is doing is playing straight and making clear he isn't going to be messed around.

If they don't like it, well, fuck them. They are the ones with the idiot friends. I don't see how you can say he's done everything you'd expect him to do. First he denied having mates round. When that was exposed as a lie he basically phoned them, accepted their denial, shrugged his shoulders and said 'case closed'.

One man's grass is another man's law abiding citizen.

I've rented out a couple of flats in the past, and the contract terms these days are pretty draconian. For example in the contract I use, the following clause if breached is sufficient to allow the landlord to give notice to the tenant..

"12.1   The Tenant shall not (nor allow others to) cause nuisance or annoyance to the Landlord, other tenants or any neighbours."

I don't want any tenants who cause grief for the neighbours. it's bad for me, bad for the neighbours, and bad for prices. If I were the landlord in this case and it was a first offence I'd tell them if it happened again they were out, and I'd definitely pressure them to pay up for the damages.
