depends on the make/model of laptop.

if the machine is screwed, you will need to get the drive out of the old machine, and then connect it to the new one - easiest way is to put the old drive in a usb caddy and plug it into the new laptop.

I'll have to unscrew it out, then. What do you mean by a USB caddy?

While I appreciate the humour, Kinboshi, the question was posed because I am simply clueless as to how to transfer the information over. Given that google cannot distinguish between the variables involved in my particular circumstance, I judged that it was perhaps best to ask humans who, by sheer coincidence, may have had to undergo a similar process and therefore get an answer more suited to me.

The information on that drive is very important and I want to make sure I can get it across to the new HDD as soon as possible. While I am sure that google can answer every question ever asked, I was merely hoping to encounter someone that has been through the same process and can assist in a more personal way.

The Laptop was a Toshiba Equium. Having unscrewed the laptop and removed the HDD, I need to purchase a "usb caddy" and this will enable my new laptop to access the information on the old HDD. Correct so far?

basically yes...

you need to get one of these :

http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase6.3&prodID=B16152

the only variable is whether your drive is a SATA drive or IDE. (if its a newer laptop it is more likely a SATA). the one above will work for IDE (the rear of the drive will have two long rows of copper pins if it is IDE).

this is a sata one :

I would say, that you mention that the data is "very important" - if so it maybe advisable to take it to a professional, depending on the "value" of the data contained on the disk....

I guess you didn't appreciate the humour then.

It was actually the answer you were looking for as well, wasn't it?
