their conditions are here, articles 16 and 17
http://www.easyjet.com/EN/book/conditions.html
unless I'm reading it wrong it looks like you have to make a claim as soon as you discover the damage and within 7 days so you might have a chance
did you tell them the banjo's value when you checked it in? if not their liability is limited to £820
gl
Does she require proof though that it happened at the airport at not in the taxi or something?
Well yes, I'm afraid she does.
In the circumstances, sad as they are for Dana, if you were EasyJet, would YOU pay up? I don't think so!
You said Natwest didn't have to pay me, which they didn't, but I still managed to get that back, in full too. No harm in trying, surely?

almost certainly yes. but my point really was that she shouldn't be fobbed off by them if they say it should've been reported at the airport, she's still entitled to put in a claim however unlikely a positive result is

Thanks for all your views/condolences/horrible links to painful gentlemen's problems. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I don't think I can do anything else terribly proactive while I'm in Amsterdam, sigh. Will see what I can do when I get home.
Don't suppose anyone knows someone in Amsterdam who can lend me a banjo for tomorrow night? I found exactly one banjo rental shop in the city, and there's a note on the door saying that the dude's gone to buy banjos and won't be back until Tuesday. FML.

Banjos on Ebay Netherlands, location: nearest to Amsterdam first
http://shop.ebay.nl/items/__banjo_W0QQLHQ5fPrefLocZ0QQQ5ftrkparmsZ66Q253A2Q257C65Q253A1Q257C39Q253A1QQ_scZ1QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQ_sopZ27QQ_scZ1
Maybe buy it and sell it off in the UK. Good luck.
If you get a very cheap airfare back you could always book an extra seat and put your banjo in it, I know Ryanair allow this.

Could it be covered by your home insurance?
This didn't get enough attention imo.
