i don't support my country because, i only support one team, and thats the team i was born into and raised to follow.

In my mind there is no room for two teams in peoples lives.

I Love Celtic, and i Dislike all things Rangers, Scotland play with rangers players, therefore im going to naturally dislike Scotland.......I just cannot bring myself to cheer on players from my rival club, i just can't do it. (How you can dislike a player one week, then like them the next is beyond me!)
No worries, it's the narrow minded stuff we expect from Old Firm fans anyway. It's really quite simple to understand though, one is club football, the other is international football. You are represnted in both spheres by different teams, until such time as Celtic beomes a country I would have thought it would be pretty easy to understand the difference, and how there isn't the slightest conflict there.

It should also be pretty easy to see (contrary to your post), that you are born into your country, but many people simply choose a club to follow. I've yet to meet an international fan that follows another country rather than their own.

Why aren't you called Celtic Dave then? The Scottish bit is clearly not something that has any meaning for you?

Very Funny!

I'm an Aberdeen fan and despise Rangers, Celtic and Hearts (not necessarily in that order) but I would much rather see a Scotland team made up entirely of their players win the world cup (lofty ambition i know) than Aberdeen the Champions League or UEFA cup (might aswell aim high).

Personally i can't see how anyone could not support their country and this is why i fail to understand many Old Firm fans. Each to their own i guess and as long as we avoid a team GB we can unite on that.

Good to see that you can all agree on something.  Cheesy

Anyway, I wonder which grounds they will use and if they will keep it to London grounds? Obv the Emirates and Stamford Bridge, but when will the new Spurs ground be ready?

lol, just the type of reaction i expected TBH

To settle a few point:

1/ I don't like rangers players, and won't ever support them, i also don't agree with Celtic players going to play for Scotland, as they are deciding off their own backs to go and join up with Rangers players to play for a country, If i were a pro player, i wouldn't choose to go play for another team that had a rangers player in it, this also brings into the equaltion joining another club team that has an ex ranger playing for them, thats a debate for another night.

2/ Old firm fans are not all narrow minded, they get absorbed in the rivalry, which is both healthy and welcomed in the game (provided it stay in the game, and on the pitch)

3/ The Burning question (Scotland with rangers players or England?Huh?) ---- i wouldn't want either to win to be honest, id probably go for a walk lol, throw into the mix rangers players in the england team, and we have a real dilema. To settle the question, id turn off the telly as i hate international football, since my team don't compete at international level.

4/ Forget what people tell you about being born into a country, and choosing a club to support! thats bollox, you are born into a club (or at least some of us are blessed to have been) Celtic is not a club to choose to support, your born to support.

5/ The username Scottish Dave - Only the older members of Blonde will know this (or at least the first 402 members, since i was the 403rd) but my original name on here was just Dave, however back then this place was El Blondie's place of refuge, the fact there were 2 Dave's confused things dramatically during conversations, therefore i decided to change it to Scottish dave, so people knew which one was which, and where i was from the live poker reason's at the time.

If you'd like ill start a Poll of suggestions of what to change it to (Idiot/toss-pot/bigot, have already been used!) thats fine.

These above points are purely my views only and should not be confused with the views of all old firm fans (Id hate to be though of in the same group as rangers fans anyway! Yuck lol)

Does this shed any light on any of the points raised by posters in this thread?

Regards
Celtic(Born into) Dave

Dave, while I admire your sentiment, and agree that you should be born into a team just as you are born into a specific country, and while you might be an East end of Glasgow boy yourself, I think even you will admit that your team is followed by "fans" from all over the country with no such link to Celtic (or Rangers), many never even having stepped foot inside Strathclyde, never mind Glasgow or Parkhead. They are "born into" supporting Aberdeen, or ICT, or St Johnstone, but instead choose - yes choose Dave - to support one of the ugly sisters.

That to me makes International fooball the purest form, it is still played as the way it was intended, your "tribe" representing you. We are all Scots (or whatever nationality), and no-one ever glory hunts a "better" team. Your team IS what you are born with. It is everything you stand for, just that club footbal doesn't actually meet your criteria, it does for you, but unlike International football it doesn't for everyone.

Fascinating stuff.

It would be easy to rip the piss out of you for all of the above (And I shall in a minute) but it does bring up some interesting Club vs Country debates. I agree, you are born into your club the most of the time, I support Sheffield Wednesday because my sodding uncles pretty much beat it into me (all my mates at school were blades) but I've always been a tad more passionate about the National side than I was the Owls....until I actually went to Cardiff and watched them win the playoff final a few years ago. That said, I think England winning the world cup would still be the pinnacle of being a football fan for me, if it ever happens in my lifetime.

Maybe its because I support a shit club side and a big national side that sways me this way, whereas you support a big club side and a shit national side, thus swaying you the other way?

What if a Rangers player joined Celtic? What is your attitude towards them then?
Would you piss on a Rangers fan if they were on fire?
What if you needed a blood transplant, and the only donor was a Rangers fan?
Do you like the show Walker, Texas Ranger?

FWIW, I think one of the greatest things about football is when rival sets of fans put their differences aside to support the national side. I love watching the England games with my Blade mates, even though they once chased me out of a pub during a derby, and love cheering on players  I will happily berate for 40 odd weeks a year when they are playing in the Premiership.

Wowsers, the all conquering English side of the last 40 years eh!

I think England winning the world cup would still be the pinnacle of being a football fan for me, if it ever happens in my lifetime.

Imagine how big the badwagon would be,  ''I've waited all my life to see England win this, much better than when my club wins anythzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz''

P.S.  This is a general observation, not aimed at your post! Wink

Norwich will always be the most important thing for me in football, I would take Norwich winning anything over England winning the world cup. I have invested an awful lot time and money into supporting Norwich, i can't say that of England.

I don't buy the arguement that cos Norwich are crap that supporting England cos they might win something is a reason to support the national side more. In fact it is the other way round when Norwich were promoted a few years back it was something special to me and the other 1000 or so people who spent every Saturday travelling round the country to watch generally awful peformances. I don't get that with England.

Now your getting into the debate about different Rungs of fans ie, there are Hardcore sets of fans, then there are softer core fans, and it all depends on the history of your level or support, how many generations have followed them, how much of Celtic is in your blood lines etc etc etc, You can still get a Celtic fan from aberdeen being a harder core fan than someone from Parkhead, depending of their family history.
