Thoreau - The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation.
Andrew beat me to it (as usual
), but with a slightly different quote.

Yeah - yours is actually correct though. Mine seems to be a cut and shut of Thoreau's quote plus something from Oliver Wendell Holmes.

Quotes from a rather clever Welshman:
A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.
I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong.
Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so.
The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
There are two motives for reading a book: one, that you enjoy it; the other, that you can boast about it.
There is much pleasure to be gained from useless knowledge.
When one admits that nothing is certain one must, I think, also admit that some things are much more nearly certain than others.
Men who are unhappy, like men who sleep badly, are always proud of the fact.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

I feel cheated!
Mr Warren Buffett, the sage of Omaha, (the place, not the game), who first used the analogy I believe, rarely gets it wrong. He is one of my lifetime heroes, right up there with Brunel, & one of the great economic thinkers of our time.
Try googling "the sayings of Warren Buffett", or reading a few of the books about him - there are dozens.
A most extraordinary man.
I'm such a fool!
