Not the most amusing story but did make me laugh, i forgot about it and my pal belled me and said something that reminded me about it.

Just gives you a bit of an insight into how people outside of the gambling world view the game.

last Saturday young smart looking black girl, probably about 20, walks into the betting shop and goes up to the counter, this is how it goes...............

Girl: "I want to bet on the final of x-factor please"

Cashier: "let me get the prices up"

she goes through the prices with her...............

Girl: "O.k, i'll have £10 on all three please"

cashier:(puzzled look on her face) "you're not going to win though unless the outsider wins though so it's probably better if you pick one"

Girl: "but i dont know who's going to win"

cashier: "so you sure you want to back all three"

Girl: "yeah, i should win shouldn't i if i back all three then i get the winner and should win money"

The girl is completely serious and the cashier woman is looking at me now in disbelief so i interject and try to give a rudimentary guide to gambling explaining that it's not a place that just prints money or we'd be in here all day backing everything to which she replies: "well i just want to back the winner of x factor" lol.

she then proceeds to insist the cashier write the bet on three different slips so it looks like shes picked the winner, Roll Eyes

just listened to annie nightingale on the bbc iplayer who said when you play roulette you should use the past numbers on the LCD screen to work out the odds of your numbers coming up next roll.

She just wants to pretend she won to her friends perhaps?

The most popular lottery numbers are whatever came out last week.

Once every 135,000 years, the numbers will be the same on two consecutive draws.

When this happens, 3,000 would be comedians will all be dancing in the streets, until they find out they have to share the jackpot with 2,999 other people and their ticket is only worth £900

For the same reason, it is not a good idea to pick the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 and 6

Why play at all, have you seen the juice on a lottery ticket?

I don't play the lottery, but it's really useful to use as a reference point when explaining gambling theory to muggles.

Same chance of winning, but you'll win less.

Then I slip the word equity in there and we're off.

I find the shit quite interesting really.

If you pick 6 numbers yourself "at random" you are less likely to pick combinations with two or three numbers close together, because of the way the human mind works and our bias perception of random.
So your random six numbers that you pluck from your head as you look at the card are more likely to have been picked by other people too.

So you could argue that the best way is to use a random number generator by gettting a lucky dip.

However, I think if there is a bias in the way people "randomly" select their numbers, rather than making it truly random yourself, you can exploit the bias in the other direction. That is, look for combinations that people are less likely to pick.

The number of people who pick birthdays and dates of anniversarys and stuff as their numbers makes for a heavier density in the numbers 1-30 being picked.

So to maximize lottery ticket equity (other than not fookin playing) my theory is to select three numbers at random (with a random number generator) between 31 and 49. Write down all the possible neigbours to these three numbers, and pick the fourth number as one of them (at random random with the random machine, not your head).
The other two numbers you select at radom between 1 and 49 (again, not yourself, with a random number generator)

As you're fated to win the lottery one day (because you're special) following this advice could save you millions when you don't have to share your jakker.
