Just saw 9/4 on Bluesquare to win Australian Open and 2/1 for SPOTY 2009. If you fancied the 9/4 for the Aussie Open surely the SPOTY would be a better bet as winning any slam would surely secure this for him. He seems bang in form just now but if he doesn't get Aussie Open he'll probably give a decent showing in US Open too later in the year.

i dont think so

too many middle englanders still have a been in bonnet about his ABE joke a few years back

unless there is a wimbledon win i dont think he can pull in enough english votes

Looks like being a quiet year for UK sport at the halfway stage.  Ashes and Lions Tour to come, but not convinced of our chances and if there was success in either, it is likely to be more of a team effort than one individual dominating the headlines.

So, is Jenson Button the obvious choice now assuming he wins the F1 championship ?

Current odds on Betfair

Bet on Jenson Button to win sports personality of the year at 2.2
Lay Jenson Button to win F1 Championship at 1.41

Any thoughts ?

Button is an obvious contender but I'm not keen on any F1 driver getting this award.

You could easily lose both those bets imo.

Potential gain ain't worth the risk

At the moment Button is so dominant it's hard to see  past him.

Cavendish is having  a big year, so if he could even better last years result on  Le Tour he would be a good choice - if it wasn't for the fact he's a cyclist of course - cycling just isn't big enough to have a back to back SPOTY winner.

Murray has still to get through Wimbers, a win there and he is once again right back in the running.

Not if he wraps himself in a Saltire instead of a Union Jack.

Surely no if involved here.
