Only reason why people would use a Mac is to do arty stuff a bit better, else its just bollocks.

If Macs are so good - why the need for a Windows emulator?  Most PC users don't find the need for a Mac emulator.

Legacy apps obv.

Although the only reason I use parallels is to test websites in ie6/win.

Anyway stating the obvious a bit here but Mac (and Linux) aren't windows, most people are disappointed by this.

Form over function, would disagree with you about that, with the exception of small parts of the dock - windows taskbar isn't exactly better on that front though (having said that the new win7 one looks good).

Poker rooms aren't exactly legacy apps.

It has to be form over function if you have to get an emulator to run some of the stuff you use frequently.

By that definition anything that isn't windows is form over function.

I wouldn't buy a Mac to play Poker on and I wouldn't buy a Mac because you don't want to update OS every year or so (as you'll just get annoyed when there's a new version of OS X out). That doesn't mean the Mac is a worse product, just that windows fits those needs better. Hopefully in future more software will be cross platform and we'll have decent choice of which platform we want to run.

There's also quite a bit of demand for people wanting to run OS X on a standard PC, but it's far too much of a faff to set up so it's not mainstream, I'd probably lay the blame with Apple for not allowing it legally in their license.

didn't realise they did this

so laxie's only reason for looking into macs rather than pcs in op should actually be a reason for sticking with windows

Macs are incredibly user-friendly and full of excellent, helpful little features that you don't fully realise the value of until you've been using them for a while. Lots of people are converted from using PCs to Macs, but no-one ever switches back from Mac to PC out of choice. People who tell you PCs are better are lifetime PC users who fear things they don't understand.

The main drawback of Macs is that a lot of poker software (in fact anything that comes as a .exe file) won't run on a Mac. In some ways this is good - viruses tend to arrive at your PC via a .exe file, so you don't get any of those nasties. However, Pokerstars' Mac software has got over its initial problems and now runs flawlessly. Hurrah. I suspect other poker sites will follow suit if they know what's good for them. If you desperately need to download .exe files, though, there are options - I partitioned my Mac hard drive so I can start it up either in OSX or in Windows, and Snoopy bought a bit of software called Parallels which allows him to run a virtual Windows desktop in OSX. Both of these solutions are excellent and we've never had problems using them.

Hurrah for the Mac revolution. Like that guy on the Onion said, I'll buy anything as long as it's shiny and made by Apple. They're just better.

Just to point out that if you don't want to spend $$$ doing this, you need to (from what I witnessed) get a funny copy from an IT-knowledgable brother, spend ages trying to install it, basically break your Mac, call a helpline, cry, get sympathy and a free key, partition too little space, end up having to delete things whenever you want a new thing, have Stars crash your computer if you open Firefox.

Mac's OS is better.  And if you want to Create (music, pictures, video) it's intuitive and all there for your enjoyment.  If you want to play poker, give it a few years until other sites have got their Mac-friendly software in gear.  If you want to play games, don't even bother looking at the catalogue.

You misunderstand, that was always part of my skank-a-free-copy-of-Windows strategy. Masterfully executed, if you ask me.
