Scared the poo out of myself this evening.

I knew there was going to be a problem but was ensured people had been driving up the hill.

Pretty obvious they hadnt.

So now i find myself wheels a spinning trying to make my way to the restaurant.

What are you meant to do? I cant remember my driving lessons, jees I cant drive at the best of times. But i vaguely remember some instructions for driving in the snow/ice.

Basically my wheels just kept a spinning, low revs, high revs, 1st gear, 2nd gear. Somehow i managed to get to the top after skidding around all over the place, riding the clutch and my car making some horrible noises! The finest bit was when i was turning left, my back end was going left and i almost hit a lampost!

Can anyone remind me what your meant to do, and does it make a difference that my car is a rear wheel drive?

Thanks!  Grin

Don't drive up a hill in the snow unless you own a 4x4.

All the time i laugh at people with their big stupid 4x4's.

Oh how they would have laughed at me tonight!

Don't go up in first or second gear of you can help it. Steer into the slide if it happens to help yourself go straight. Wait until the road is clear before going up, worst thing is another car sliding back down towards you.

What Ding said + try to aim for the most 'snowy' bit.  You'll have more traction on that than you will on the bits worn down from other drivers.  We don't have many curbs in Ireland, so I aim for the side of the road.  Frozen grass and dirt give decent grip.

Yep, Grandad always told me when you come down banks in the snow (he's a gamekeeper), stick in reverse and clutch control it down, never tried it personnally...

Yep I had the same problem.

Found the best way was to actually let the rear tyres slide in to the kerb. At least this put me in a straight line andn let me get started.

not good for the alloys though. Going to get them mended later in the week.
