Snow-tyres ftw.

Deflate you,re rear tyres by 20psi
I've heard that this can work quite well.
I don't know if it would work on Stu's car though because it has run-flat's which will keep their shape. (Unless driven at excessive speeds I hasten to add)

Find a really icy hill, lower the pressure of his tyres, drive up it.
Please report back on his findings.

Surely we need a hypothesis before we go jumping in to the experimental stage?
I think that with the reinforced side walls we will "cut" in to the snow therefore giving improved grip.

My hypothesis is that Stu will crash.
Now let's test it!

You lower the pressures to drive on deep snow or sand - gives you a bigger contact patch and stops digging in. For ice driving, tyres are typically as narrow and high pressure as possible, so the contact patch is smaller and they are
more
likely to dig in and find some grip. Find a pic of a rally car on ice tyres. Ridic narrow compared to tarmac ones. And studded, of course.
If you've got big fat sports tyres and want to get up a hill that's covered in snow... you're foooked, basically. Find a long way up with less of a slope.

That is so true. I've seen Fiat 126s doing much better than wide-wheeled 4x4 cars on snowy/icy roads.

Sounds about right.
My old Escort 1.3 was awesome on icy roads. You could thrash it and slide it everywhere but never felt like you were out of control.
This huge BMW thing though is like a living nightmare!! The back end was just all over the place. Not good at all.

Just a thought Stu.
Did you turn your traction control off? You won't get anywhere fast with that switched on.

A fool with a nice car who couldn't be bothered to read the instructions.
To be fair mate I forgot to turn mine off the other day as well. It was only when I got home that I realised what a tit I'd been.
Good luck with the drive home tonight.

That's only on the really bad bits btw where your own sensitivity is better than the car's.
Once you get going at normal speed you should turn it back because then the car is better than you at spotting traction loss and getting you out the poo.

Nothing worse than your car sticking it in your eye.

get a cab up the hill imo
just watched a news report on the travel chaos where they interviewed a woman who thought that the conditions were too bad for driving so she was going to get a taxi to work instead

Stupid woman.
She should have got the bus.
Unless of course she meant that she wasn't up to driving in the conditions, and thought it best that someone else drive her?
