A rather humorous thing happened to me last night which restored my faith in ye olde Poker Gods.

Playing live at my local casino, I folded UTG and shot off to the toilet, when I came back I was on the small blind, damn speedy players. I arrived back as the cards were being dealt.

I assumed that my hand was dead as the cards were in the air before I sat down, but the dealer didn't muck them post deal and no-one said anything.

Anyhew, mid-position raise, flatted in the cutoff and folded by the button, I look down at KK and announce raise. BB immediately pipes up that my hand is dead as I wasn't at the table during the deal.

I decide to challenge him and say that as no-one had mentioned it and there had been action by 8 players in front of me then my hand is live again. Floor is called and my hand is mucked.

BB then pushes all-in over the top and is snap-called by the initial raiser, cutoff folds and BB's AQ fails to improve against AA.

Had to say thanks to him for saving me a bundle of chips as he swore his way from the table.

Busted soon after outside the cash, but that really made my night.

P.S. on an aside note was my reading of the rules correct, or was I in error regarding the my hand being live or not?

Cheers

I would assume that if the cards aren't mucked by the time there is action, then they're live.

And BB is a douchebag LDO.

Avoiding this KK vs AA cooler was the poker Gods way of saying thankyou for washing your hands.

Why go for a slash UTG anyway? Can you not time your bladder to go in mid position?

I seem to remember seeing a notice at Walsall that the hand is dead if you're not sitting down when the second card is dealt. The fact that the deal has started makes no odds it seems.

Some dealers have a habit of not mucking cards in front of an empty chair until action reaches that point. Not on a par with your post but something that ought to change perhaps.

Seems fair enough that hand is dead (so long as rule consistantly applied)

Original raiser is still a douche, ldo

Yep, the new Grosvenor rule apparently.  The deal starts when the first riffle takes place, and you have to be in 'your playing position' (don't think it mentioned seat) when the last card is dealt (I think it was that rather than your second card).  Should make for some interesting steeplechases across the room when a player sees the dealer start dealing at his table as he walks back across the crowded card-room.

D- must pay more attention robert

the notice that you read stated that a player must be at his playing position (note: they do not have to be seated) by the time the button receives their 2nd card, i.e. the deal is complete

this new grosvenor rule finally brings them into line with the rest of the world
