No, that's one of the many definitions, more state that it is a novel (a short one).

A novella is a novel as much as the UK is a country.

King's written 48 million books (approx). Why choose one that some people might not consider to be a novel?

Only 6 of them are novels.  Others are books, stories, and trilogies.
