From Metro "A Labour life peer who sent and received text messages minutes before he was involved in a fatal motorway crash was freed from his 12-week jail sentence by the Court of Appeal today. Lord Ahmed, 51, who was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court on February 25 after admitting dangerous driving, was not present for the ruling by three judges in London. Allowing Lord Ahmed's sentence appeal today, Lady Justice Hallett said that the imposition of a prison sentence in his case had been justified. However, she added that the court had been persuaded that it could now take an "exceptional" course and suspend the 12 weeks for 12 months." http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?Text_driver_Lord_Ahmed_freed_on_appeal&in_article_id=578979&in_page_id=34I am sure that him being a lord had nothing to do with this decision and that if he was just a chav that the decision would have been the same.

(i think it was a she) decided that for him to go to prison now would seriously jeapordise the community projects that he's working with at the moment so deferred his sentence by 12 months so that the community projects didnt have to suffer. he's still going to serve the same sentence. however, if, when this is off the front pages in a few months, his sentence gets quashed then thats another story

The guy who threw a shoe at Bush should count himself lucky he didn't get shot in the head while he was doing it.
3 year sentence is not too bad a result all things considered.

I see the world leaders at the G20 summit in London next month will get smoking rooms.
One rule for the rest of us...
Hope somebody throws ashtrays at them, let alone shoes.

texting was 25 mins before (i think) and had no bearing on the crash wasn't it 2 minutes before? which would meant he was probably reading a previous ext prior to crash

If he doesn't re-offend within the next 12 months he doesn't go back to pokey. It wasn't a "deferred" sentence which is something totally different i.e. a postponement of sentence for up to 6 months.

The amount of time I am having to waste getting plans in place for these idiotic G20 protesters lined up is a sore point.

The G however many are the people that have landed us in the credit crunch - but will never feel the effects. These protestors are a necessary part of our politics and the leaders they are protesting against are actively trying to remove the rights of protest. Once they are successful we are looking at insurgency eventually.
