ive been playing fulltime poker now for 4 years. the first 2 where great and things went well. but over this past while ive noticed that i have become lazy and get bored very easily.

i used to play every sport going when in school so was very fit. but this past 4 years has seen me do no excesses at all and live of takeaway food.

so what i am asking is do you think being fit matters for fulltime poker?

I am starting a whole fitness/food schedule from today and even the idea of it has given me a bit of a boost so hopefully my results will improve as they have been dramatically decreasing. i have also booked a few appointments with a dietitian, and also a psychotherapist. I know that sounds a bit extreme but when its your life then i guess you have to take it seriously.

i could go into the aspects of it all a bit further but its 8am and I'm tired lol so what are your thoughts about it and have you any tips

Why are you seeing a shrink?

You don't need to see a dietician - the right food to eat is hardly a secret.

Hide the takeaway menus and delete Dominos from speeddial.
Put your trainers on and go for a run.

Exercise in and of itself will make you feel better. Releases endorphins which give you a natural high, plus will make you sleep better so you have more energy during the day.

Going to the gym is definitely beneficial before a punting session imo. Endorphins and all that.

Not quite at the desperate measures stage!

Good topic.

It's one of the few similarities between online poker players and live poker players - proper bunch of unhealthy bastards we are. You look around and everyone is whiter than a sheet with man boobs.

The dietician/therapist route sounds a bit extreme. My advice would be don't live by night like a lot of poker players. Have some sort of a decent routine where you encorporate the gym and healthy food without anything feeling like a sacrifice otherwise you wont stick to it for long. Allow yourself one blowout day every week/fortnight.

Personally I dont think that physical fitness is a necessary attribute to be successful at poker, some of the most successful players around carry a little extra weight and think that trainers are a fashion item.  Sometimes a high level of physical fitness can cause you to become impatient, physical fitness and long periods of sitting doing nothing do not go hand in hand.

The correct Mental attitude is obviously a much more desirable characteristic, so the psychologist may be a help.

But always remember that the cards do not give a monkeys wether you are superfit or have a razor sharp wit, they have no memory, they do not lay plans for the future, they simply offer you an opportunity to to make decisions, decisions which are best made when you have an enthusiasm and an appetite to play.

I would say that ample rest and NOT playing tired is of greater importance than fitness alone.

the number 1 most important thing for the professional poker player to exercise is their arms. How do you play internet poker? By clicking a mouse right. What do you need for that? Big MFing biceps that's what. And for the live pro it's even more important, after all half the time you're asleep waiting for some guy to think about folding his 72 offsuit preflop and what do you use to rest your head on? Yes mate, you lean on your arms don't you.

These guys started playing .25/.50 3 months ago and they're already crushing the 5/10 games on stars.

see what I mean, big MFing biceps. it's just what you need.

This chap walked into The Vic last month and has already taken over £400K out of the big game

Last week Neil "Bad Beat" Channing got so fed up with losing that he hired Madonna's personal trainer at considerable cost to train him to get huge arms.

You may have heard of fullflush1 who is meant to be some skinny little english boy who talks trash and has won millions from the best internet players on the planet. That is deliberate misinformation that has been put out by the real fullflush - this beast of a man in the pic below.

Now I might get into trouble for this but I'm gonna risk it for my good friends here on blonde. A business acquaintance actually secured a copy of Channing's training schedule and emailed it to me. This workout is costing him over 2K a week. Each morning (which is when Fabio gets the chance to moonlight from Mads) Neil smashes through this finely tuned workout of poker champions

Monday               dumbbell curl, alternate dumbbell curl, hammer curl,
concentration curl, barbell curl, EZ curl bar curl, olympic barbell curl
preacher curl, reverse curl, zottman curl, incline curl, decline curl,
                          curl to exhaustion

Tuesday                ditto

Wednesday            ditto

Thursday               rest day (to be spent checking out your gunz in the mirror)

Friday                   as per monday

Saturday               ditto

Sunday                 stand in squat rack with pink ladies' dumbbells and do as many curlz as possible in half an hour.
if this gets difficult towards the end of the session grunt as loudly as possible to get those last few reps.

It's all about the pump baybee. Do your curlz, get all the gurlz AND win millions at poker at the same time.

I hope this info is useful to you guys, feel free to ship a few K to byronkincaid on stars once you've won a few mill. gotta go now, off down the gym.
