Is there anyway to stop new members sending pms until they have x amount of posts on the forum?

Yep, it's possible, and I have already brought the subject up in the mods room today. It was requested or discussed many moons ago, but for some reason (that I just can't remember) we chose not to take this action.

Might be time for a rethink, it might save someone getting grimmed.

Even a very low number of posts would be fine as it stops them using a similar name, like they are doing now.

Exactly. Last night we saw the 'RoyalFlush' cloned account just as we were going to watch a film... if we hadn't seen it when we did, it might have been morning before a Mod had dealt with the problem (as many are away in Cardiff etc).

When we originally decided not to take this action (and like I said previously, I can't remember the specifics) we didn't have the current problems, but, now I can't see a better solution than to restrict pm's to new users.

I think all name changing has to be done by a mod.

There was that one time Nemesis and I had similar post counts, so we changed our names and our avatars to the other ones name and avatar.
It was all very funny for 5 minutes; I think the mods changed the rules to restrict users changing their names afterwards.

I know that the forum reginstration process can be changed to make it so a mod approves of new members..  might be an option.
