Calling The Clock
«
on:
April 24, 2009, 01:27:16 PM »
Just flicking through this months Poker Player mag and
Paul
Jackson
is answering questions 'In The Tank'. The last question relates to calling the clock, which Paul discusses, when and who should be allowed to do this. He ends his answer with this gem,
'You may also call the clock on an opponent because they are a tosser and you want to aggravate them'
Is that good advice ?
Very true though.

Calling the clock is an absolute c#'ts trick! The ONLY person who should be allowed is the opponent in the hand. As for anyone else at the table STFU and have respect for the player trying to make a decission.
For any thinking player (all blondes obv
) who has the ability to piece a hand together, sometimes (when it is for a huge pot and usually all in) you need that time to piece it all together. You can be 90 seconds into the process (first 30 seconds used with stack count, pot odds, your stack, pay off etc). Then for some random to say "clock" just completely wrecks your train of thought.
The only exception to this is where a player is consistantly doing it, to shoot an angle or run the clock, in which case a dealer should be able to use discretion, call the TD and have an insta clock (getting shorter each time) put on them.
And apologising for doing it afterwards doesnt count either
Yes this does tilt me!

I've never seen that before.
Absolute comedy.
"No no stop clapping. He doesn't deserve applause. He called with King Jack!"
That guy is without doubt the master of speech play.
Calling a clock as a strategy is a great poker tool if it leads to this sort of thing. Brilliantly done by Mr G.

Yeah we had a good chuckle in the PokerPlayer office when Paul sent his copy in. And if you could only see some of the stuff we edit out. To be fair to Paul in his reply he also says. 'My view is that under normal cirucmstances the people who should be allowed to call the clock are limited to the other live player(s) in the hand.' He adds a proviso that if a player has constantly been taken an inordinate amount of time then it's a different matter as calling the clock may be the only remedy to stop the time wasting.
Anyone ever played against John Phan? Alledgedly he constantly takes masses of time over apparently simple decisions.

His response was spot on, the last line just made me chuckle.

Tony G is compensating for something. If he did that to me I would just laugh in his face. Raplh Perry did well to not get up and punch him.
Speech play is all well and good - but after he has called?!! I don't think so.

It's pretty full on, I admit, but it makes great television, which is good for poker. Gimme that any day over a bunch of pokerladies in a flip flip donkfest, with nothing to watch but bad beats, bitching and boobies.
More Tony G, lol at teh internets kids with too much time on their hands

Awful rubdown by Tony G but this clip always cracks me up. He manages to tilt up Juha Helpi pretty nicely in the Premier League final too.
Always annoys me when people not in a hand in a cash game calls the clock. I seem to see it more and more often.

i disagree in a tourny a player taking 2 minutes to make up his mind is costing every play at the table and everyone should be allowed to call the clock

in a raked game i agree with you
but when you are playing £8 an hour to sit at a table and some idiot is runing your HpH rate then you have the right to call the clock
only problem is it normally takes 30 seconds to get the TD over and to start the clock then 1 minute clock which he will burn to the last second when he would of more than likely acted in 45 seconds or so if you hadnt called for the clock

IMO Jacko's articles are probably some of the most amusing out there. He should do a Blog. Maybe he does and I can't find it though...
