Odds and Ends

·        This is only the second time this event has been included on the WSOP schedule.  While many “mixed game” tournaments have taken place in the 39-year history of the WSOP, these two games had not been combined together exclusively until 2008.

·        Pot-Limit poker is more popular in Europe than the United States and elsewhere.  Many of the top players in England, Ireland, France, and elsewhere specialize in this form of poker.  Not surprisingly, 6 of the 9 finalists were Europeans.  In fact, 14 of the 45 players who cashed in this tournament were Europeans.

·        The tournament was played over three consecutive days.  On Day Three, the final table action took place on the secondary stage, near the ESPN feature table area, which was simultaneously dealing out the conclusion of the $1,500 buy-in Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em event.

The Event

·        The $2,500 Mixed – Pot-Limit Hold’em / Pot-Limit Omaha event attracted 453 entrants.  This created a prize pool totaling $1,041,900.  The top 45 finishers collected prize money.

·        Last year’s Mixed event, played in the identical schedule slot, attracted 457 players.

·        The final hand of the night came when Boukai had the best hand pre-flop, lost the lead on the flop, then improved on the turn and dragged the final pot of the tournament.  Boukai had pocket nines.  His tough adversary N. Shaun Bennani had Q-J.  Bennani was in the lead when the flop came A-K-Q.  But a nine on the turn gave Boukai a set of nines, which held up.

Gonna be tough for Praz - the other table has more than twice the number of chips that his does.

According to Marc Convey they're pretty much all tez though.

Wish I was that tez !!

We all do. I think we can take Mr Convey's words with a pinch of salt.

Or trust his word given that he's watched that tournament consistently for the last three days.

Always amuses me when poker updaters call players tez, while they are walking around with pen & paper in their hands instead of cards.

+1 updater's should update not comment on standard.

Meanwhile....ONE TIME PARKER!

I just saw this.

Lol. Of course updaters can comment on the standard of players!

In print it is often better to display the information in a dispassionate, unbiased manner of course, so you aren't deliberately leading people's view of the play but most updaters are players also, meaning they will naturally have opinions on play.

To say that because people are walking around with a paper and pen, they shouldn't have opinons on the play is ridiculous imo.

I would back people like Snoopy, Chris, Jen and Marc Convey against 90% of the field in some of these WSOP events. I imagine their profit and loss stats would bear this out.

I would own all of their soulz though. Also I think it's a bit harsh on Marc to take a comment he said from the rail and take him to task for it.

If mocking people from the rail were a crime, Flushy would be on death row!

Anyway the WSOP has been great so far in my opinion. Jason Mercier is in my mind, the form player in the world at the moment.

He's such a sicko, amazing the poker sites are so slow to realise how good players like Mercier are, whilst they snap up people whose achievements pale in comparison.

He deserved his bracelet, as did Ivey, who won a bracelet by outplaying two guys who were far more experienced than him at deuce to seven.

As Negreanu put it, Ivey was a worse 2-7 player than those two but a superior poker player...and he showed it.

Good Post Rod, & it echoes my already stated view - that I do believe Updaters should comment as they see fit.

As to taking Marc "to task", hold up! I simply said that calling 4 of the last 8 players in a 1,450 runner WSOP event "tez" was a comment that needed to be taken with a pinch of salt. That's not "taking him to task"!

You boys seem to forget - I've done my share of Interactive Live Updating, starting years back, I was first in the field, all over Europe, & Jen & I Updated an entire WSOP ME, 9 days of it, so I know it's not an easy job, & I remain a Member of the Updaters Union. And I'm sure Marc does a splendid job. I just dislike this culture of dissing folks so readily. It's pretty easy to do, & I guess thats part of the attraction.

Let's move on.

PS - It's OK to diss children, & old people actually, as they both wind me up a treat. I'd have them all shot. Now they ARE all tez.

Flushy, you were only to happy to banter with me on the rail at the PPT Final about the shocking standard of play there. I don't remember you telling me that, as a live updater, I should keep my opions to myself. And your statement that "If my entire life bankroll was the buy in of this tournament, I'd still play" is a lot more degrading and out of place to anything I've ever said about the standard of play at a tournament.

First of all i was not picking on you or your comment in particular, more the habbit of updaters to cast comments onto their updates when they probably have no clue about the specific table dynamics or meta implications of a hand. Obviously updaters should have opinions i just dont think they should be the centrepiece of the updates.

You and me in France were 2 friends talking i think you would agree that you would not post the stuff you were saying as an employee representing a company, it really pisses me off sometimes when updates on blonde have stuff written by an updater expressing their personal opinion about a player/play as if it was their own blog.

Ironically this debate has stemmed from a comment which was not posted anyway! To which i have no problem with the comment, as long as you don't put it into print. Cheesy

The Winner

·        The 2009 World Series of Poker $2,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em
championship is Anthony Harb, from Canton, Michigan.

·        Harb is a 28-year-old professional poker player.

·        Harb was born in Southfield, MI.

·        Harb collected $569,254 for first place.  He was also awarded
his first WSOP gold bracelet.  This marked his third time to cash in a
WSOP event.

·        “The gold bracelet means a lot,” Harb said in an interview,
conducted moments after his victory.  “It means I am here to stay.  I
made it through this very tough field, against all these pros. I can
say that I hung with the best of the best.”

·        “The money helps out a lot,” Harb said afterward.  “It gives
me a big bankroll.  It means I have the opportunity to play a lot more
tournaments.”

·        Harb stated that he came to the WSOP hoping to satellite into
several events.  “I am a goal-setter,” he said.  “I’m a grinder.  I
grind it out.”

·        Harb revealed that he usually comes to the WSOP every year on
a one-way ticket, since he rarely knows when he will return home.  He
stays with a group of friends in a rented house.  “I play with a lot
of good people and have my friends around me which means I can only
get better,” Harb said.

·        Among Harb’s close friends is Justin Scott, from Redford, MI.
Scott won a gold bracelet in 2006.

·        Harb is primarily an online player.  He has numerous wins and
cashes in online tournaments.  His two previous WSOP in-the-money
finishes were 121st in 2008 Event 32 and 436th in 2009 Event 4.  Prior
to this victory, Harb’s total live career tournament earnings amounted
to just $5,991
.  He earned nearly 100 times that amount with this
victory.

·        Harb had a good-luck charm while at the table.  He used a
small back turtle as his card protector during the entire tournament.
“I have never used a card protector before and (a friend) gave me this
turtle.  I really like the concept of the turtle.  He is chubby and
slow.  But when he strikes, he bites hard.  He does not win a lot of
races, but when he comes out of his shell, he’s dangerous.”  Harb said
he has a name for his turtle – “This is Pedro.  Don’t mess with
Pedro,” he said.

The Players

·        The final table was comprised of no former WSOP gold bracelet
winners.  This was the fifth event of eleven finales held so far this
year which guaranteed a first-time winner.

·        The runner up was Peter Rho, a Korean-born poker pro from Las
Vegas, NV.  Rho is a graduate of Duke University.  He also finished
second in the 2009 Aussie Millions Championship.  Second place in this
event paid $350,019.

·        The third-place finisher was Jim Geary, from Phoenix, AZ.  He
is a master gamesman.
Geary is a former college chess champion,
represented the U.S. at the Scrabble World Championships, and came up
just short of winning his first gold bracelet.  Third place paid
$230,670.

·        Jim Geary joined Ville Wahlbeck (who accomplished the same
feat at an adjacent table on the same day) as the first two players at
this year’s WSOP to make two final table appearances.  He finished 7th
in the $1,500 buy-in Omaha High-Low Split event.

·        The fourth-place finisher was Adam Adler, from Ft.
Lauderdale, FL.  He is the CEO of “UltimateCollegeModel.com,” which is
the first publicly-traded social networking and modeling company.
Fourth place paid $161,768.

·        The fifth-place finisher was Jonathan “Cosmo” McGowan.  This
marked his third time to cash in a WSOP.  McGowan prefers to play in
cash games, calling tournament tournaments a “lottery.”  McGowan
scratched off $116,833 in prize money.

·        The sixth-place finisher was Adrian Dresel-Velasquez, from
Sacramento, .  The Nigerian-born attorney once served in the Peace
Corps in Guatemala.  He was the Assistant Attorney General for the
state of Wisconsin in the previous administration.

·        The seventh-place finisher was Scott Hall, from Fayetteville,
AR.  He has numerous cashes in online tournaments.  Hall says he
started playing poker as part of the “Moneymaker boom.”  This was his
best WSOP finish.

·        The eighth-place finisher was Michael Dyer, from Houston, TX.

·        The ninth-place finisher was Brent Sheirbon, from The Dalles,
OR.  Sheirbon has cashed in each of the past two WSOP Main Events.  He
came in 392nd in 2007 and 135th in 2008.

·        Former gold bracelet winners who cashed in this event
included -- Perry Friedman, Harry Thomas, “Little Man” Michael Sica,
Jason Mercier, Kevin Song, “Minneapolis Jim” Meehan, David “the
Dragon” Pham, Tom McEvoy, T.J. Cloutier, and Phil Hellmuth.

·        Hellmuth’s cash in this event was the 70th of his career.  He
is ranked first on the all-time cashes list at the WSOP.

·        T.J. Cloutier’s cash in this event was the 54th of his
career.  He is ranked fifth on the all-time list.

·        The defending champion in this event was Matt Keikoan, from
Richmond, .  He entered this tournament, but did not cash.
