Good luck to him, in hindsight a terrible decision to take the Celtic job but this could be a good move to get back in to football.

No, I'm no fan of Barnes as a manager, a commentator or even a person, but he was a great footballer & earned his playing career by being DAMN good.

My initiial point was that 'the goal against Brazil' was his high point. By a long distance.

He was good, I'll grant you. Great? No.

Joined a Liverpool set-up that was still near the peak of their era and made his contribution. I don't think that makes him a great outside of Liverpool.

This is not anti-Liverpool sentiment, more that he was consitstently disappointing for England.

On that yardstick of Pele and Maradona, very few players would be considered great. I would go for these two as World class and Barnes as a great player (edit on his day).

Uh-huh.

"The Liverpool fans adoration for "Digger" was emphasised when he finished in the top 5 of the poll 100 Players Who Shook The Kop which was conducted by the official Liverpool Football Club web site in the summer of 2006. More than 110,000 supporters worldwide voted for their 10 favourite players of all time, Barnes finished 5th behind Robbie Fowler (4th), Ian Rush (3rd), Steven Gerrard (2nd) and the man that signed him thrice for Liverpool, Newcastle and Celtic Kenny Dalglish (1st)."

Liverpool fans, who probably watched him the most, therefore rate him higher than Hansen, Keegan, Souness and many other so called "greats".

"Twice in his career, Barnes was voted Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. He has also won the PFA Players' Player of the Year and is widely regarded as among the most talented players to wear an England shirt. Barnes was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of his contribution to the English game."

Yes, not great outside of Liverpool.

If you think his goal vs Brazil was his highlight then you obviously didn't see enough of him.

Can we have some football superlative guidelines please? I don't want to go around saying Jack Rodwell looks a good player and then leave myself trapped when comparing him to Arteta as i can't call him great because he wouldn't get into an all time World XI

I'd rate Barnes above Owen for his length of time being a great player at Liverpool, he produced the goods when needed.  Owen, meh - at his best he was great, not seen it for years.

PS re th great debate - I'd have paid just to watch Barnes playing at his best - that's a great player IMO. Legend status there might  an argument.

If you think his goal vs Brazil was his highlight then you obviously hate all things Liverpool or you have a poor knowledge of football

whatever

I hadn't realised that all opinions on football had to be verified by quoting wikipedia, but here goes

"Barnes continued his international career into the mid 1990s, but it was seen by many as a disappointment." "...he was never seen as a player who peaked when wearing an England shirt...."

I can list far better players than Barnes who never did it for their country who are considered "greats" by many. Barnes played poorly in a poor England team in the nineties. So did the other 10 players for most of that era post 1990.

Opinions weren't verified by Wikipedia, more the accolades he's received.... I listed his recognition by over 100,000 Liverpool fans as one of our best five players ever. Then his recognition from both football writers and fellow players with major awards over several seasons, both of which counts for a lot more than your obvious Man U coated, Liverpool hater opinion.

All you've done to support your argument is quote someone's opinion on wikipedia.

Clutching at straws methinks.
