This is pretty much my view on religion, everyone is entitled to their own view on it, there is very little chance of either side being proved right. The one thing I can't stand is people trying to impose their religious views on others.

So you agree that parents shouldn't impose their religious views on their children then?

Just picking up on this

I don't think parents should 'impose' their views onto their children, whether tdoe younhey be religious views or otherwise.  Guide/teach and hopefully give a good basis for all view points for sure, but NOT impose.

Like Claire, our son isn't being bought up is any set religion. He asks questions and it's scarey some of the shite that the other kids at school tell each other (for example, a muslim told out son that his mother (me) will not go to heaven because I am a Christian and he and his father are muslim - other children have told each other that they will be diseased for life if they touch a bible), all of these things are coming from older siblings apparently. What makes me sad is that some parents have no idea how their strict views are actually creating problems for their children.

Like Claire, we also teach our son about all the different religions. We haven't said though that God does not exist fact, as to me that is for our son to decide whether he wishes to believe in that or not.  I have told him though that some people believe that there is an entity out there and that different people have different names for it God/Allah/Fate etc.

Some people dont need to see something to believe it exsists, hence why its called faith.

Funny that..

Some people want to believe in something for which there is no evidence, or evidence to the contrary. Traditionally we call this 'insanity' but these people are uncomfortable with this so create a new term 'faith'.

Some things people have 'faith' in can seemingly be fleshed out in a reasonable way, eg the Resurrection of Jesus (there were witnesses who saw it and wrote about it, many of whom were prepared to die for this belief. "You're saying they imagined this and went to their deaths, what are you a moron?" Other things seem to make no sense whatsoever but are still articles of faith, for example god is three persons in one, each one is god, but there is one god, not three. We cover this by calling it a load of bullshit mystery.

God is different to Santa though. Santa Claus is supposed to come down my chimney and bring me presents on Christmas Eve. He doesn't. FACT. A Santa Clause may exist and may even make toys and ride a sleigh pulled by flying reindeer and one may have a brightly lit red nose but deliver presents to everyone in the world he does not. So that Santa does not exist.
God however can just sit there and do nothing if he/she/it wishes so it's harder to prove he/she/it doesn't exist.

I've told my kids about the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but for some reason, they're a bit sceptical. Random school teachers keep telling them that some beardy weirdy made the universe, and generally they should believe their teachers, but obviously not in this case. I keep telling them we only stick to the earth because of the pressure from the FSM's noodly appendages, but gravity seems to be a more popular "theory". Stuff and nonsense. I've never "seen" gravity, so it can't be true.

Smallisnobis will be well chuffed when he comes back from golf and sees how popular his thread is.

He sure will. As a piece of speculative trolling, it's been spectacularly successful. Unintentional trolling, naturally.

Don't anyone DARE bring religion anyone near my diary.

I am sorry that you feel I am being vindinctive and unreasonable by wanting factual examples of how there are serious contradictions within religious texts.

I merely gave you the chance to see my views, I foresaw this explosion of viewpoints and opted to try and keep out. I just think that if you're going to take a stance that the minimum you ought to do is some research, upto and including finding relevant examples. Else your basis for argument isn't supported at all.

I don't accept this as clear evidence.

I'm getting a bit bored of this thread now.

What are your views on the World's major religions then?

Yes, my parents never pushed their views on me, I wasn't christened as a child as they thought it was a choice I should make in later life. If i ever have children I hope to do the same.

back from golf, you guys are missing my point... i only see the bad side of religion.for example, circumcision, brutal at any age and surely leaves a scar on any child, not to mention the extra sense you get when making babies, in the name of god, the branch divinian, they burnt to death....... in fact i could go on and on, but religion is evil. i think the catholics are the worst. if you don't know already, some of the things religion is responsible for make me sick, and thats all religions. it makes my blood boil just thinking about it
