So there I am waiting for my Taxi in the Lobby of DTD. We are deep into Day 1 of the £300 deep stack, a tournament I had exited some time ago. I then donated some more money at the cash tables and wisely decide to call it a day.
Unlike most poker players I do not object profusely when a total stranger decides that you are the chosen one who would like to hear his bad beat story. Nor do I subscribe to the generally known theory that of those who listen to your tale of whoa, half of them don’t care and the other half are glad you lost. For me it’s probably more like 25/75. So I politely put down my poker mag and the conversation goes something like this:
Mr B: I hate this game
Me: Bad beat?
Mr B: Yes
Me: What happened?
Mr B: I raise from late position to 3000 with A Q and both the blinds call.
Mr B: The flop comes down K Q 3 both the blinds check and I bet out 3000
Me: 3000? Why did you bet so little?
Mr B: I knew I was winning.
Me: mmmm Ok
Mr B: The turn comes the 10 and the big blind move all in. I insta call and he turns over Q 10………Q fkn Ten can you believe that?
Me: how much did you have behind when you called?
Mr B: 20K
At this point my Taxi arrives and I have to leave our conversation but I did wonder who was shaking there head in disbelief the most me or Mr B.
Mr B was last seen wandering the car park in search of a sympathetic ear and muttering Q fkn Ten under his breath.

Did you not hear the story though? Both pre AND on the flop he was ahead. That doesn't sound like Kin to me.

My hobbies at the moment are Golf and Poker - I have previously played football and squash. All the participants in all these games tend to have endless conversations about their experiences. In a golf club after the game there are many "bad beat" conversations that compare with the poker ones. The difference appears to be that poker players limit their conversations to poker only. The bad beat stories are endless and usually repetitive. The main thing that comes across is the enthusiasm that all poker players have for recounting the stories of good and bad beats.
I am as bad as anyone - I found myself recounting a bad beat I had 2 years ago and half way through realised the stranger I was telling it to had glazed eyes and was just not listening.
Any way Chris , I reckon you were not in the mood to listen to this guy; as you had had a real bad beat to go out of the comp - you did tell me about it saturday night but I wasn't really listening!!
