Never really considered Iveys lack of personality.
Always thought it would be his name that would carry the word.
You're right about if it was Negreanu, I can imagine him doing TV shows, Newspaper interviews radio shows etc etc
Ivey just wants to sit there and be balla

In a way - it could be good for poker
Ove is balla in a very private way. You get people like helmuth acting like a prick and joe public think that is the way to act.
Maybe people adopting a more respectful game would be a good thing - i could certainly be better!
Dont get me wrong - i love chatting to people at the tables - but that is different to acting like a knob.

There's more chance of James being on the final boosting the poker interest in the UK. It depends how well it gets PR'd outside the usual enclosed section of poker/gaming media.
The tabloids are bound to love the train driver turned poker millionnaire story, just like the Feldman paperboy turned pro story. However this one has a bit more weight with the build-up to a big TV event rather than anonymous winnings online.
Oh and the progression from small local tournaments to the biggest event in the world sounds nice as well.

I think more old people will be going to watch people they know play poker.

The effect it will have cant be compared to Chris the Moneymaker. Nothing will effect the game again the way that did.
I think that FTing the main event with 6500 people playing is more an achievement than his 2-7 lowball bracelet but all in all its the best performance in 1 wsop ever whether he wins it or not. Two braclets and a final table in ME in one year wont be appreciated by people outside of poker but sure will be by people within the community

Agreed, I wrote something to that effect last week http://uk.pokernews.com/news/world-series-of-poker/2009/07/james-akenhead-uk-poker-1262.htm (mods, take it off if its too spammy) - I cant believe I manage to mention Eddie the Eagle Edwards in the same piece. Not been much mainstream coverage of Akenhead yet unfortunatley, hopefully it will come as the final table gets nearer.

Unfortunately, even if James wins it, the TV coverage of his play is likely to be sparse given that he is not American. How many of Jon Kalmar's hands were shown a couple of years ago?

Its all about the delay, there is a chance (albeit a small one) that Akenhead can raise the profile of poker in the UK in the 4 months he is waiting for the final table to take place rather than the televised coverage of the final itself. Kalmar obviously never had a delay so wasn't able to do the same (Shame too, because he is a real character)

Celebrity winning it is the only way that it will break free into the main public arena.
If James was to win it then their might well be a strong boost in this country, I imagine numbers would be up everywhere.

(sponsorship committments aside) if i were in james's shoes the last thing i would want to do would be going large & bigging myself & the game up, a low-key 4 months would be my preferred choice.

The public would get fed up with you after about a week though. Oh and there would be a night out fairly early doors sure to alienate all potential sponsors in spectacular fashion. Good luck with that
