Our use of the batting powerplay is bordering on some of the worst tactical decisions of all time. We take it when 9 down and Jimmy Anderson in, pure genius.

England have struggled for ages with this. The tried before to have it mid innings when a partnership was blooming and kept losing wickets as soon as they did take it.
I don't think the taking it late was as bad as the commentary team suggested as everytime it was nearly time to go they lost a wicket and someone had to get in first.

Agree that taking it just because a partnership is going well is v dodgy. Ideal timing must usually be between 37 to 44 - the more wickets down the earlier you take we. We just seem to have one very basic idea. Without KP we are very ordinary.

What does the powerplay entail?
I assume something to do with where the opposition is allowed to place fielders?

you'll be like a proper bloke soon with all this sporting knowledge you're picking up Matt
there's a circle marked 30 yards from the wicket. during powerplays only 2 fielders are allowed outside that circle. this means the batsmen can play more big strokes with less danger of being caught or having the ball stopped before it reaches the boundary

There are 3 powerplays. 1. Automatic for the first 10 overs and only 2 players can be outside the 30 yard circle. 2. Bowling side for 5 overs when they choose and 3 fielders can be outside the 30 yard circle. 3. Batting side for 5 overs when they choose and 3 fielders can be outside the 30 yard circle. Sandy
