I will always remember hearing this song for the first time as it did make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It tells the true story of a VERY brave young man.
Soldier
(Harvey Andrews)
In a station in the city a British soldier stood
Talking to the people there if the people would
Some just stared in hatred, and others turned in pain
And the lonely British soldier wished he was back home again
Come join the British Army! said the posters in his town
See the world and have your fun come serve before the Crown
The jobs were hard to come by and he could not face the dole
So he took his country's shilling and enlisted on the roll
For there was no fear of fighting, the Empire long was lost
Just ten years in the army getting paid for being bossed
Then leave a man experienced a man who's made the grade
A medal and a pension some mem'ries and a trade
Then came the call for Ireland as the call had come before
Another bloody chapter in an endless civil war
The priests they stood on both sides the priests they stood behind
Another fight in Jesus's name the blind against the blind
The soldier stood between them between the whistling stones
And then the broken bottles that led to broken bonmes
The petrol bombs that burnt his hands the nails that pierced his skin
And wished that he had stayed at home surrounded by his kin
The station filled with people the soldier soon was bored
But better in the station than where the people warred
The room filled up with mothers with daughters and with sons
Who stared with itchy fingers at the soldier and his gun
A yell of fear a screech of brakes the shattering of glass
The window of the station broke to let the package pass
A scream came from the mothers as they ran towards the door
Dragging their children crying from the bomb upon the floor
The soldier stood and could not move his gun he could not use
He knew the bomb had seconds and not minutes on the fuse
He could not run and pick it up and throw it in the street
There were far too many people there too many running feet
Take cover! yelled the soldier, Take cover for your lives
And the Irishmen threw down their young and stood before their wives
They turned towards the soldier their eyes alive with fear
For God's sake save our children or they'll end their short lives here
The soldier moved towards the bomb his stomach like a stone
Why was this his battle God why was he alone
He lay down on the package and he murmured one farewell
To those at home in England to those he loved so well
He saw the sights of summer felt the wind upon his brow
The young girls in the city parks how precious were they now
The soaring of the swallow the beauty of the swan
The music of the turning world so soon would it be gone
A muffled soft explosion and the room began to quake
The soldier blown across the floor his blood a crimson lake
There was no time to cry or shout there was no time to moan
And they turned their children's faces from the blood and from the bones
The crowd outside soon gathered and the ambulances came
To carry off the body of a pawn lost in the game
And the crowd they clapped and cheered and they sang their rebel song
One soldier less to interfere where he did not belong
And will the children growing up learn at their mothers' knees
The story of the soldier who bought their liberty
Who used his youthful body as a means towards an end
Who gave his life to those who called him murderer not friend

Wow, some great songs, Hallelujah, Time of Yr life, English Rose, er.. Shaddup a yr face, here's one I sniffle at when I play.
Billy Bragg, don't think he wrote it and not liked from any political perspective, just a commentary on a tragic situation.
My youngest son came home today
His friends marched with him all the way
The fife and drum beat out the time
While in his box of polished pine
Like dead meat on a butchers tray
My youngest son same home today
My youngest son was a fine young man
With a wife, a daughter and two sons
And a man he would have lived and died
Till by a bullet sanctified
Now hes a saint or so they say
They brought their young saint home today
An irish sky looks down and weeps
Upon the narrow belfast streets
At childrens blood in gutters spilled
In dreams of glory unfulfilled
A s part of freedoms price to pay
My youngest son came home today
My youngest son came home today
His friends marched with him all the way
The pipe and drum beat out the time
While in his box of polished pine
Like dead meat on a butchers tray
My youngest son came home today
And this time hes here to stay
-----------
Sometimes the whole song may not have all you want but a particualr line or two hits the spot, I like these few lines - young angst, desperation, innocence, romance - ok... fetch me another drink :-)
And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
(But then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn't ask)

Roger Waters - Too much rope.
History is short
the sun is just a minor star
The poor man sells his kidneys
In some colonial bazaar
Que sera sera
Is that your new Ferrari car
Nice but I think I'll wait for the F50

Some great lyrics here, thet have left me seaching the download sites.
However the JCB one has brought back some lovely memories of me being sat next to my late father (a gentle giant) in a tractor wasting away the summer days, listening to him sing, tell me stories and tell jokes. Lets hope this song makes xmas No'1 instead of the waffeling riff pilchard or some dross from xfactor.

A true classic.........
This bed is on fire with passionate love
the neighbours complain about the noises above
But she only comes when she's on top
My therapist said not to see you no more
She said you’re like a disease without any cure
She said I’m so obsessed that I’m becoming a bore, oh no
Ahh, you think you’re so pretty
Caught your hand inside the till
Slammed your fingers in the door
Fought with kitchen knives and skewers
Dressed me up in womens clothes
Messed around with gender roles
Dye my eyes and call me pretty
Moved out of the house, so you moved next door
I locked you out, you cut a hole in the wall
I found you sleeping next to me, I thought I was alone
You’re driving me crazy, when are you coming home

Sometimes you have to suffer a little bit in your youth to motivate yourself to succeed in later life.

Of course not.

Sittin' on my own
Chewin' on a bone
A thousand million
Miles from home
When Something hit me
Somewhere right between the eyes
Sleepin' on a plane
You know you can't complain
You took your last chance
Once again
I landed, stranded
Hardly even knew your name
I wanna talk tonight
Until the mornin' light
'Bout how you saved my life
You and me see how we are
You and me see how we are
All your dreams are made
Of Strawberry lemonade
And you make sure
I eat today
You take me walking
To where you played
When you were young
I'll never say that I
Won't ever make you cry
And this I'll say
I don't know why
I know I'm leavin'
But I'll be back another day
I wanna talk tonight
Until the mornin' light
'Bout how you saved my life
(You saved my life)
I wanna talk tonight
(I wanna talk tonight)
'Bout how you saved my life
(I wanna talk tonight)
'Bout how you saved my life
(I wanna talk tonight)
'Bout how you saved my life
(I wanna talk tonight)
'Bout how you saved my life
I wanna talk tonight

Played at my moms funeral, she planned it herself after suffering from a long illness. She had a wicked sense of humour and didn't want everyone leaving the church too glum, she embarrassed us to the last as she made me and my sister whistle at appropriate points, which is quite difficult with snot blowing bubbles from our noses.
Some things in life are bad,
They can really make you mad,
Other things just make you swear and curse,
When you're chewing life's gristle,
Don't grumble,
Give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best.
And...
Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the light side of life.
[whistle]
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle.
That's the thing.
And...
Always look on the bright side of life.
[whistle]
Always look on the right side of life,
[whistle]
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin.
Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
So,...
Always look on the bright side of death,
[whistle]
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
[whistle]
Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And...
Always look on the bright side of life

This song goes out to my mother - The one I loved and the one I lost - When it
comes down to thinking about what my mother's done for me, the love she's given
me. - It makes it easy to do a song like this - So this ones for you mom I love
you
Early one Sunday morning / Breakfast was on the table / There was no time to
eat / She said to me boy hurry to Sunday school / Filled with the long of glory
we learned the holy story / She'll always have her dreams / Despite the things
/ This troubled world can bring.
Oh Sadie don't you know we love you sweet Sadie
Place No one above you sweet Sadie
Well Well Well
Living in the past
Sometimes it seems so funny, no money can turn your life around
Sweeter than cotton candy / Stronger than papas' old Brandy/ Always that needed
smile / Once in awhile she would break down and cry / Sometimes she'd be so
happy / Being with us and daddy / Standing the worst of times / Breaking the
binds with just a simple song
Oh Sadie - She's Loving my song in a special way - Sweet Sadie - Living in the
Past - Oh she's never sinning in Love she's always winnin - my my my my my - I
love you mama - I just can't forget how you gave me love oh no - If there's a
heaven up above I know she's teaching angels how to love - Its a mean world
without ya - and I surely miss you much mother - and now that your gone I'm
gonna carry on - Cause your cryin lady - ooh sadie - When I think about the
things that you done for me - Hey it brings a joy way down deep inside of me -
oh oh oh oo oh - See I love you mama - Yes I do - I'll never forget you mama no
oh oh oh

"Budapest"
I think she was a middle-distance runner...
(the translation wasn't clear).
Could be a budding stately hero.
International competition in a year.
She was a good enough reason for a party...
(well, you couldn't keep up on a hard track mile)
while she ran a perfect circle.
And she wore a perfect smile
in Budapest... hot night in Budapest.
We had to cozzy up in the old gymnasium...
dusting off the mandolins and checking on the gear.
She was helping out at the back-stage...
stopping hearts and chilling beer.
Yes, and her legs went on for ever.
Like staring up at infinity
through a wisp of cotton panty
along a skin of satin sea.
Hot night in Budapest.
You could cut the heat, peel it back with the wrong side of a knife.
Feel it blowing from the sidefills. Feel like you were playing for your life
(if not the money).
Hot night in Budapest.
She bent down to fill the ice box
and stuffed some more warm white wine in
like some weird unearthly vision
wearing only T-shirt, pants and skin.
You know, it rippled, just a hint of muscle.
But the boys and me were heading west
so we left her to the late crew
and a hot night in Budapest.
It was a hot night in Budapest.
She didn't speak much English language...
(she didn't speak much anyway).
She wouldn't make love, but she could make good sandwich
and she poured sweet wine before we played.
Hey, Budapest, cha, cha, cha. Let's watch her now.
I thought I saw her at the late night restaurant.
She would have sent blue shivers down the wall.
But she didn't grace our table.
In fact, she wasn't there at all.
Yes, and her legs went on forever.
Like staring up at infinity.
Her heart was spinning to the west-lands
and she didn't care to be
that night in Budapest.
Hot night in Budapest.

Kiss me goodnight and say my prayers
Leave the light on at the top of the stairs
Tell me the names of the stars up in the sky
A tree taps on the window pane
That feeling smothers me again
Daddy is it true that we all have to die
At the top of the stairs
Is darkness
I closed my eyes and when I looked
Your name was in the memorial book
and what had become of all the things we planned
I accepted the commiserations
Of all your friends and your relations
But there's some things I still don't understand
You were so tall
How could you fall?
Some photographs of a summer's day
A little boy's lifetime away
Is all I've left of everything we've done
Like a pale moon in a sunny sky
Death gazes down as I pass by
To remind me that I'm but my father's son
I offer up to you
This tribute
I offer up to you
This tank park salute

This could be the very minute
I'm aware I'm alive
All these places feel like home
With a name I'd never chosen
I can make my first steps
As a child of 25
This is the straw, final straw
In the roof of my mouth as I lie to you
Just because I'm sorry doesn't mean
I didn't enjoy it at the time
You're the only thing that I love
It scares me more every day
On my knees I think clearer
Goodness knows I saw it coming
Or at least I'll claim I did
But in truth I'm lost for words
What have I done? It's too late for that
What have I become? Truth is, nothing yet
A simple mistake starts the hardest time
I promise I'll do anything you ask ... this time.

I never thought it would happen
With me and a girl from Clapham
Out on a windy common
That night I ain't forgotten
When she dealt out the rations
With some or other passions
I said you are a lady
Perhaps she said I maybe
We moved into the basement
With thoughts of our engagement
We stayed in by the telly
Althought the room was smelly
We spent our time just kissing
The RAilway Arms we're missing
But love had got us hooked up
And all our time it took up
I got a job with Stanley
He said I'd come in handy
And started me on Monday
So I had a bath on Sunday
I worked 11 hours
And bought the girl some flowers
She said she'd seen a doctor
And nothing now could stop her
I worked all throught the winter
The weather brass and bitter
I put away a tenner
Each week to make her better
And when the time was ready
We had to sell the telly
LAte evenings by the fire
With little kicks inside her
This morning at 4.50
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where 30 minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker
She looked just like her mother
If there could be another
And now she's 2 years older
Her mother's with a soldier
She left me when my drinking
Became a proper stinging
The devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie
No more nights by the telly
No more nights nappies smelling
Alone here in the kitchen
I feel there's something missing
I beg for soem forgiveness
But begging's not my business
And she won't write a letter
Although I always tell her
And so it's my assumption
I'm really up the junction.

HEART AS BIG AS LIVERPOOL
When all the lights go out forever
Somewhere near the end of time
The noise will pass and the dust will settle
And you'll be on my mind
Now you won't find it hard to understand
Though it's so hard to explain
The who and what and how and why and wherefore
You kept me sane
You kept me sane
'Cos you were there for me
Oh, and you set me free
To be what I want to be
With dignity
Heart as big as my hometown
Lay me down by water cool
Heart as big as the city
Heart as big as LIVERPOOL
Well I'll come running from the other side
When I hear you call my name
And if somebody wants to point the finger
I'll take the blame
I'll take the blame (I'll do the same)
'Cos you were there for me
Oh, and you set me free
To be what I want to be
With dignity
Heart as big as my hometown
Lay me down by water cool
Heart as big as the city
Heart as big as LIVERPOOL
And I am not alone
And I am not alone
And I am not alone
And I am not alone
And I am not alone (You are not alone)
And I am not alone (You are not alone)
And I am not alone (You are not alone)
And I am not alone (You are not alone)
You are not alone
Heart as big as my hometown
Lay me down by water cool
Heart as big as the city
Heart as big as LIVERPOOL
Heart as big as my hometown
Lay me down by the water cool
Heart as big as the city
LIVERPOOL
(And you are not alone)
And I am not alone!
